The Arc of Butte County is a nonprofit founded in 1962, dedicated to empowering individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) to live, work, and thrive. Through programs including adult day services, respite care, supported employment, and independent living skills training, we champion inclusion, independence, and full participation in society. We're looking for compassionate team members who share our commitment to making a meaningful difference.

About the position

As Staff Accountant II, you will support day-to-day accounting operations and help maintain accurate, organized, and audit-ready financial records. You will manage core accounting responsibilities, support accounts receivable activities, assist with month-end and year-end close, reconcile accounts, and work with departments across the organization to resolve financial discrepancies.

You will provide day-to-day guidance and support to other accounting staff, help improve accounting processes, and serve as a resource for questions related to assigned accounting functions. This role is expected to actively contribute to the Finance Department's continuous improvement by completing assigned work accurately, raising concerns, identifying potential problems, and recommending improvements to strengthen processes and controls.

Success in this role requires strong attention to detail, organization, independent judgment, and the ability to identify issues, ask appropriate questions, and contribute to improvements. This is an in-person, on-site position based in Chico, CA. Remote work is not available for this role.

What You'll Do:

Prepare and post journal entries, accruals, and account adjustments

Complete monthly balance-sheet, bank, and general-ledger reconciliations

    Support month-end, quarter-end, and year-end closing activities

Maintain general-ledger accounts and research and resolve discrepancies

Record, monitor, and reconcile accounts receivable activity

Monitor outstanding receivables and support follow-up on overdue balances

Review accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and other accounting transactions as needed

Assist with financial statements, management reports, and variance analysis

Prepare schedules and supporting documentation for audits and tax filings

Help maintain internal controls and support compliance with organizational policies and generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP)

Identify opportunities to improve the accuracy and efficiency of accounting processes

Provide guidance, training, and day-to-day support to other accounting staff

Support special projects and other Finance department initiatives

Maintain confidentiality of financial, employee, and organizational information

Promptly bring to the attention of the Controller or Finance Director any errors, irregularities, internal control weaknesses, compliance concerns, or transactions that appear inaccurate, incomplete, or inconsistent with policy

Proactively recommend improvements to accounting processes, workflows, systems, and controls to increase accuracy, efficiency, and timeliness

Actively participate in Finance Department planning and improvement efforts by contributing observations, questions, and ideas

Perform other duties, tasks, and special projects as assigned by the Controller or Finance Director

    Other duties as assigned

Communication and Accountability Expectations

The Arc of Butte County values a culture where staff raise concerns openly. Identifying potential problems and recommending improvements is an essential function of this role, not an optional one. Concerns and suggestions raised in good faith are welcome .

What You'll Bring:

Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant accounting experience.

At least three years of professional accounting experience.

Strong knowledge of GAAP, general ledger accounting, and financial recordkeeping.

Experience with accounts receivable, month-end close, and account reconciliations.

Experience using accounting software; Sage 50 or similar accounting systems preferred.

Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including pivot tables and lookup functions.

Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.

Strong attention to detail and accuracy.

Ability to research discrepancies, identify issues, and recommend solutions.

Ability to manage multiple deadlines and work independently with limited supervision.

Ability to provide guidance and support to other accounting staff.

Ability to collaborate effectively with Finance and other departments.

Clear and professional written and verbal communication skills.

Ability to handle confidential financial and organizational information appropriately.

Willingness to raise questions, concerns, and improvement ideas constructively and promptly, even when doing so means questioning current practices.
