SUMMARY

The Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office, New Orleans, Louisiana, provides the care, custody, control, and rehabilitation of inmates. The Classification Manager is a civilian personnel employee assigned to the Intake and Processing Division of the Orleans Justice Centre. The Classification Manager is primarily responsible for supervising the classification specialist staff to ensure that staff conduct appropriate intake interviews to assess needs regarding residence, employment, education, drug/alcohol, mental health problems, and past and present involvement in the criminal justice system.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

Primary Job Duties &Functions:
• The Classification Manager is responsible for supervising the daily work of classification staff within the Classification Unit.
• Monitors classification and reclassification reviews to ensure accuracy.
• Receives inmate medical clearance lists from the Medical Unit.
• Maintains lists of all inmates placed in each of the programs within the prison system.
• Conduct housing unit audits consisting of inspecting and reporting inmates’ physical location based on their assigned POD, cell, and floor.
• Assess known risk factors and monitor any change in risk status.
• Maintain and monitor accurate records and proper documentation.
• Trains all new classification employees on the classification and reclassification process; describes the proper process for interviewing and rating inmates.
• Handle all problems and questions relating to the classification of inmates.
• Attend weekly meetings to discuss classification issues and produce a daily admission and discharge status report.
• Comply with OPSO policies and procedures, as outlined in the Inmate Classification policy.
• Prepare multi-housing move lists and communicate with sworn staff regarding inmate housing movement within the jail.
• Assigns workload, provides direction, establishes priorities, and ensures work complies with quality standards.
• Resolves staff complaints, grants leave requests, and participates in employee selection and disciplinary processes.
• May conduct face-to-face interviews regarding the assessment of the resident (s) safety, reasons for behavior, Skills, and Competencies:

• High School Diploma Required.
• Two years’ experience working with and communication a public setting.
• Basic computer literacy, including Microsoft Office (AS-400/Jail Management System) proficiency a plus but not required.
• Ability to conduct inmate interviews tactfully and objectively to elicit the most information possible that could impact their classification or status. • Ability to work individually, as well as with others, including civilian or law enforcement personnel or outside entities, to achieve whatever daily objectives are in place relative to the OPSO inmate population and the diverse roles and functions of the OPSO.
