Position Description:

The City of Vandalia is accepting applications for a Full-Time Park Maintenance Technician. Under general supervision, the Park Maintenance Technician performs a variety of skilled, semi-skilled, and unskilled tasks in the maintenance and operation of city-owned buildings, parks, grounds, and other facilities.

JOB OVERVIEW:

The Parks Maintenance Technician plays a vital role in maintaining and enhancing the City's parks, recreation facilities, and public spaces. This position performs a variety of skilled and semi-skilled maintenance tasks, including groundskeeping, facility upkeep, equipment operation, and event support to ensure safe, clean, and welcoming environments for residents and visitors.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

• Completion of secondary education or equivalent (high school diploma or GED).

• Must possess a valid State of Ohio driver’s license and must remain insurable under the City’s vehicle insurance plan.

• PREFERRED QUALIFICATION: Ohio Nursery and Landscaping Association Certified Landscape Installer certification, Certified Arborist through the International Society of Arboriculture, or Certified Playground Safety Inspector, through the National Recreation and Park Association.

• PREFERRED QUALIFICATION: Pesticide Applicator’s License; Certified pool operator certification and/or other licenses/certifications based on the needs of the City.


JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

Performs a variety of skilled and semi-skilled repair and maintenance tasks in City offices, parks and buildings such as mowing and maintains park and open space areas such as baseball and soccer fields; mows weeds; cleans and maintains tennis courts; Drags ball fields; lines fields for games; Assists in the maintenance of the municipal swimming pool; Inspects, washes, and performs routine maintenance of park drinking fountains and restrooms; Sweeps, washes, paints, and repairs or replaces park tables, benches and bleachers; maintains plumbing systems (e.g., snakes pipes, installs faucets, etc.); maintains electrical systems (e.g., replaces broken parts, installs switches and fixtures, mend wiring, etc.); repairs concrete, brickwork, and other masonry; paints trim, walls, cabinets; builds and install doors, locks, partitions, paneling, etc. Other duties as assigned.

Salary, Hours and Benefits:

The starting salary range for this position is $23.98 - $30.84 an hour, depending on experience. Work hours are Monday – Friday from 7:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.

Position Responsibilities:

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE POSITION:

40% 1. Performs a variety of skilled and semi-skilled repair and maintenance tasks in City offices and buildings (e.g., HVAC, plumbing, electrical, masonry, painting, carpentry, etc.); maintains plumbing systems (e.g., snakes pipes, installs faucets, etc.); maintains electrical systems (e.g., replaces broken parts, installs switches and fixtures, mends wiring, etc.); repairs concrete, brickwork, and other masonry; paints trim, walls, cabinets, etc.); builds and installs doors, locks, partitions, paneling, etc.

40% 2. Performs a variety of skilled and semi-skilled tasks to assist with the efficient delivery of City services (e.g., mowing, trimming, general landscape duties, litter pick-up, removal of trash, painting, blacktop patching, etc.); operates and maintains City-owned equipment and vehicles as assigned (e.g., miscellaneous hand and power tools, mowers, trimmers, chain saws, chipper and tree pruners, leaf vac., pickup truck, etc.); assists with the maintenance of the municipal swimming pool; removes snow and ice from city facilities, walkways, and parking areas

5% 3. May perform a variety of custodial tasks to ensure cleanliness of buildings, restrooms, and other facilities (e.g., scrubs, dusts, wet mops, vacuums, strips, sweeps, waxes floors, empties trash, washes walls and windows, shovels, applies salt, etc.); operates power cleaning equipment (e.g. vacuum cleaner, carpet extractor, floor buffing machine, power washer, etc.); inspects and maintains custodial equipment.

5% 4. Opens, closes, locks and unlocks facilities as needed; assists with set up and tear down of special events.

5% 5. May perform lead work in the supervision of assigned part-time and seasonal maintenance workers (e.g., schedules and assigns tasks; recommends the hiring of job applicants; recommends discipline; attends or participates in meetings in which policy questions are reviewed or discussed, etc.).

6. Attends meetings and serves on committees, as directed; attends training and seminars, as directed.

7. Maintains required licensure or certification, if any.

8. Meets all job safety requirements and all applicable PERRP safety standards that pertain to essential functions.

9. Demonstrates regular, predictable and punctual attendance.

Physical Requirements:

INHERENTLY HAZARDOUS OR PHYSICALLY DEMANDING WORKING CONDITIONS:

Employee works in the vicinity of floor or wall openings, elevated platforms, and/or runways; ascends and/or descends ladders, stairs, or scaffolds; works on and around powered platforms and/or vehicle mounted platforms (e.g., manlifts, fire trucks); has exposure to chemical compounds found in an office environment (e.g., toner, correction fluid, etc.); is exposed to environmental conditions which may result in injury from fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases, and/or poorly ventilated work areas; is exposed to possible injury from extremely noisy conditions above 85db (weed eaters, chain saws, gas blowers); is exposed to possible injury from hazardous gases, chemicals, flammables, air contaminants, hazardous waste, unclean or unsanitary conditions, electrical shock; exposed to possible injury as a result of working with moving mechanical parts of equipment or machines; is exposed to possible injury from explosions; is exposed to possible injury as a result of falling from high places; works in or around crowds; has contact with potentially violent or emotionally distraught persons or vicious animals or life threatening situations; has exposure to fire, hot, cold, wet, humid, or windy weather conditions; exposure to hazardous driving conditions; may work second or third shift; this is considered medium work and the employee must demonstrate the ability to perform the physical demands required of the position in accordance with the U.S. Department of Labor's physical demands strength ratings.
