Department Overview

The Emergency Department operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week, offering multidisciplinary services for patients of all ages across the lifespan. The department includes a Level 1 Trauma Center, triage services with a physician-in-triage model, Adult Acute Care, Adult Critical Care, and three secure holding rooms for acute psychiatric care. Patients present to the Emergency Department through multiple entry points, including ambulance, walk-in, transfer center (Trauma and PANDA), and Rapid Response Team activation.

Function/Duties of Position

The ED team is responsible for comprehensive patient assessment, care planning, coordination of interventions, and facilitation of specialty consultations. Procedures and treatments provided include venous access placement, blood specimen collection, medication, fluid, and blood product administration, radiographic imaging, splinting and fracture reduction, laceration repair, moderate and deep sedation, point-of-care ultrasonography, advanced airway management including intubation, cardioversion, sexual assault examinations, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, and emergency deliveries.

The patient population ranges from minor complaints to life-threatening conditions, including trauma, extremity injuries, chest and abdominal pain, migraines, overdose, seizures, dehydration, heart failure, respiratory distress, acute stroke, acute STEMI, psychiatric emergencies, infection, and sepsis. Many patients present with complex medical histories, including substance use disorders. The ED team collaborates to determine appropriate disposition, including hospital admission or safe discharge with appropriate resources, education, and follow-up care.

1. Strategic & Unit Planning — Partners with the Nurse Manager to translate organizational
and nursing priorities into unit plans; contributes to goal setting (short- and long-term),
measurable targets, and implementation timelines; coordinates interventions, tracks progress
using data, and communicates status to stakeholders; supports readiness for
accreditation/regulatory changes.
2. Operational Leadership — Oversees day-to-day operations, including staffing, scheduling,
assignments, patient flow, and escalation pathways to ensure safe, effective care; leads
huddles and facilitates clear communication; may provide leadership coverage across all
shifts (days/evenings/nights/weekends) as operationally needed.
3. Staff Supervision & Development — Provides coaching, mentoring, competency
validation, and performance feedback; participates in orientation and evaluations; supports
recruitment, retention, and succession planning; recognizes exemplary practice and addresses
performance concerns.
4. Quality, Safety & Risk — Promotes adherence to professional standards, organizational
policies, and regulatory requirements; uses data to monitor outcomes; leads/participates in
performance improvement, event review, risk mitigation, and dissemination of best practices;
supports standard work and error-reduction processes.
5. Human Resources & Employee Relations — Fosters engagement and a positive work
environment; facilitates conflict resolution; supports attendance management and progressive
performance management; ensures compliance with applicable labor/collective bargaining
agreements and HR policies.
6. Resource & Financial Stewardship — Assists with productivity and resource monitoring;
applies staffing tools and guidelines; monitors overtime/premium use and supply utilization;
educates staff on financial implications of care decisions and supports cost-effective
operations.
7. Professional Practice & Collaboration — Models ethical, professional nursing practice
consistent with the ANA Code of Ethics and Nurse Practice Act; advocates for patients and
families; collaborates with interprofessional teams and shared-governance structures;
promotes a culture of safety, equity, and inclusion


Required Qualifications

• Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) required.

• Two (2) years of relevant clinical nursing experience in a related specialty, including
demonstrated leadership responsibilities required. (e.g., charge nurse, preceptor, supervisor,
or equivalent).
• Unencumbered Oregon Registered Nurse (RN) license (or ability to obtain prior to hire).
• Basic Life Support (BLS) required.
• Additional clinical certifications (e.g., ACLS, NRP) may be required by assignment.
• Leadership/specialty certification (e.g., NE-BC, CNML, or clinical specialty) within two (2)
years of hire
