Director, Scientific Engagement and Professional Societies

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Director, Scientific Engagement and Professional Societies based in the United States.

This strategic Medical Affairs leadership role is responsible for shaping and executing enterprise-wide engagement with key nephrology professional societies, guideline bodies, and scientific advisory organizations. The position goes beyond traditional stakeholder management, focusing on building long-term scientific collaborations that influence disease understanding, care standards, and healthcare system outcomes. The Director will act as a central connector across Medical Affairs, Patient Advocacy, Government Affairs, and Commercial teams to ensure aligned, compliant, and impactful external engagement strategies. This role plays a key part in advancing scientific leadership within nephrology by identifying opportunities for collaborative initiatives such as guideline participation, disease education, and implementation science programs. It requires a deep understanding of the external scientific ecosystem and the ability to translate strategic priorities into meaningful partnerships. The environment is highly collaborative, fast-paced, and mission-driven, focused on improving outcomes for patients with rare diseases.

Accountabilities:
  • Develop and lead a multi-year strategic engagement plan across major nephrology professional societies and scientific organizations, including national and international associations and guideline bodies.
  • Serve as the primary Medical Affairs lead for professional societies, advisory councils, and scientific committees, ensuring consistent and strategic external engagement.
  • Expand engagement beyond traditional congress participation to long-term, value-driven scientific collaborations with key opinion leaders and professional organizations.
  • Map and analyze society structures, committees, and guideline panels to identify influence pathways and strategic opportunities for engagement.
  • Lead strategy and execution for guideline engagement, ensuring alignment between evidence generation plans, publications, and external scientific cycles.
  • Partner cross-functionally with Clinical Development, Evidence Generation, HEOR, and Scientific Communications to align scientific output with guideline and policy timelines.
  • Identify and develop collaborative initiatives with professional societies, including disease education programs, implementation science projects, and Centers of Excellence models.
  • Ensure alignment between professional society engagement, patient advocacy initiatives, and government affairs strategies to support cohesive external positioning.
  • Establish governance frameworks and KPIs to measure impact beyond sponsorships, including guideline influence, educational adoption, and scientific collaboration outcomes.
  • Provide strategic insights and recommendations to Medical Affairs leadership based on external scientific and policy developments.
Requirements:
  • Advanced scientific degree (MD, PharmD, or PhD) in a relevant life sciences field.
  • 6+ years of experience in Medical Affairs or related functions within the biopharmaceutical industry, ideally in nephrology or rare disease areas.
  • Proven experience engaging with professional societies, guideline committees, scientific advisory boards, or similar external scientific bodies.
  • Strong track record of building strategic, non-transactional partnerships with external stakeholders beyond sponsorship-based models.
  • Deep understanding of the scientific, clinical, and policy landscape within nephrology or comparable therapeutic areas.
  • Strong cross-functional collaboration skills, particularly across Medical Affairs, Government Affairs, and Patient Advocacy functions.
  • Demonstrated ability to translate complex scientific and clinical insights into structured engagement strategies and initiatives.
  • Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills with the ability to influence senior internal and external stakeholders.
  • Strong organizational and project management skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a complex environment.
  • High ethical standards and strong understanding of compliance and regulatory requirements in external scientific engagement.
  • Willingness to travel up to 40% for congresses, scientific meetings, and stakeholder engagements, with occasional evening or weekend commitments.
Benefits:
  • Competitive base salary with annual bonus and long-term incentive compensation (equity).
  • Comprehensive health coverage including medical, dental, and vision insurance for employees and eligible dependents.
  • Retirement savings plan with employer matching contributions.
  • Generous paid time off and flexible work-life balance offerings.
  • Life, disability, and financial protection benefits.
  • Wellness programs and employee support resources focused on physical and mental well-being.
  • Opportunities for high-impact external scientific leadership and global stakeholder engagement.
  • Strong professional development environment within a mission-driven organization focused on rare disease innovation.
