Lead Driver Responsibilities
- Lead and coordinate the nightshift CDL driving team, ensuring efficient, safe, and timely movement of trucks/equipment between intrastate company job sites (equipment, aggregates, parts, muck, etc.). Primary focus is flatbed and dump truck operations.
- Serve as the primary field leader for assigned drivers.
- Provide direction and assistance to drivers during regular operations.
- Help coordinate driver assignments, routes, trucks, and job-site activities.
- Communicate schedule changes and operational instructions to drivers.
- Monitor driver performance and report significant issues to management.
- Help train new drivers on company procedures, equipment, routes, job sites, and safety expectations.
- Assist drivers with questions or problems encountered in the field.
- Promote teamwork, professionalism, and accountability among drivers.
- Serve as a communication link between drivers and management.
Driving Responsibilities
- Drive various trucks/equipment as needed while overseeing other nightshift drivers.
- Ensure trucks are properly loaded and all equipment is securely fastened; load and unload heavy equipment as required. Direct and assist with offloading and spotting for other drivers.
- Conduct and oversee daily pre-trip inspections of trucks and equipment prior to nightshift operations.
- Responsible for truck maintenance awareness; promptly report any issues to the maintenance technician and manager, and coordinate resolution during the shift.
- Supervise and assist with site cleanup and maintenance efforts during night hours, including cleaning, painting, sweeping, and construction debris disposal.
- Enforce safety protocols, manage shift handovers, and maintain clear communication with dayshift teams and management.
- Mentor and support nightshift drivers to maintain high performance and adherence to company standards.
Basic Qualifications
- Commercial Driver License Class A
- High school diploma or GED
- Valid US driver’s license with a good driving record
- Ability to pass a DOT drug screen
- Willingness and ability to work consistent night shifts
Preferred Skills and Experience
- 2+ years of experience driving with a Class A CDL (1+ years preferred minimum)
- Prior experience in a lead, supervisory, or team-lead role
- Experience with end dump, belly dump, and/or side dump trucks
- Experience operating heavy machinery such as a skid steer, wheel loader, telehandler, etc.
- Strong communication, organizational, and leadership skills
- Demonstrated reliability, work ethic, and ability to lead by example on shift
Additional Requirements
- Position requires consistent nightshift hours and may include extended hours and weekend work
- Ability to lift and haul 50 lbs unassisted
- Ability to stand for long periods of time, stoop, bend, push, and pull
- Position requires outdoor work in varying conditions
- Must be comfortable working independently with limited direct supervision during overnight hours while leading a small team
