Job Description

Backend Engineer, Senior

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Backend Engineer, Senior based in the United States.

This role focuses on building and evolving high-scale backend systems that power digital ordering experiences used by thousands of restaurants and consumers every day. You will design, develop, and operate reliable backend services with a strong emphasis on performance, scalability, and maintainability. The position sits within a modern product engineering environment where quality, observability, and continuous delivery are core engineering principles. You will collaborate closely with product, infrastructure, and frontend teams to deliver features that directly impact real-world commerce at scale. This is a hands-on engineering role where you will also influence architectural decisions and improve system design over time. You will work in a fast-moving, remote-first environment that values experimentation, ownership, and continuous improvement. Your work will directly contribute to empowering independent restaurants through better digital tools and platforms.

Accountabilities:
  • Design, build, and maintain scalable backend services and APIs that support high-traffic digital ordering and platform features.
  • Develop and deploy production-grade features with a strong focus on reliability, performance, and testability.
  • Build and optimize event-driven and asynchronous systems to handle high transaction volumes and complex workflows.
  • Collaborate with product, frontend, and infrastructure teams to translate business needs into robust technical solutions.
  • Improve system observability, including logging, monitoring, and alerting, to ensure high availability and rapid incident response.
  • Diagnose and resolve production issues such as performance bottlenecks, scaling challenges, and system failures.
  • Contribute to architectural decisions, API design standards, and long-term technical direction of backend systems.
  • Participate in CI/CD practices and continuously improve deployment pipelines and engineering workflows.
  • Ensure backend systems are secure, well-documented, and aligned with best practices for maintainability and scalability.
  • Drive engineering excellence by promoting code quality, testing standards, and iterative development practices.
Requirements:
  • 5+ years of experience building backend systems for SaaS, e-commerce, or high-scale distributed applications.
  • Strong expertise in Python and experience designing and maintaining production backend services.
  • Proven experience designing and versioning APIs, including backward compatibility and lifecycle management.
  • Hands-on experience with cloud platforms such as AWS, GCP, or equivalent, including containerized deployments.
  • Strong understanding of distributed systems, event-driven architecture, and asynchronous processing (queues, background jobs, etc.).
  • Experience diagnosing and resolving production issues such as latency, memory leaks, and performance degradation.
  • Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines, observability tools, and modern DevOps practices.
  • Experience working with data models, databases, and query optimization in high-scale environments.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively across product and infrastructure teams in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong communication skills and comfort working in transparent, cross-functional engineering teams.
  • Nice to have: exposure to frontend technologies, AI-assisted development tools, or experimentation-driven engineering practices.
Benefits:
  • Annual base salary range of $169,687 – $220,500, depending on experience and location.
  • Fully remote work within the United States.
  • Unlimited paid vacation policy supporting work-life balance.
  • Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision insurance plans.
  • Mental health and wellness support programs.
  • 401(k) retirement plan with company matching.
  • Paid parental leave, including extended bonding time for new parents.
  • Student loan assistance or continuing education reimbursement options.
  • Employee stock incentive plan participation.
  • Pet insurance and additional lifestyle benefits.
  • Strong engineering culture focused on autonomy, quality, and continuous improvement.
