Job Description
Company Overview
Function Health is the AI operating system for health, designed to empower people to live 100 healthy years. We are redefining how individuals understand, measure, and improve their health by moving beyond the limitations of traditional care and enabling comprehensive, continuous insight into human biology. Function has been recognized as one of Fast Company’s Most Innovative Companies of 2024, and is venture-backed by Redpoint and other leading venture firms. Over half a million members have joined Function to take control of their health.
Through comprehensive lab testing, MRI and CT imaging, longitudinal data, and guidance from AI and clinical teams, Function gives members a complete and continuous view of their health — and the clarity to act on it. Through acquisitions across imaging, mobile phlebotomy, and supplement tracking and optimization, Function is building an integrated health platform that spans the full path from testing to health clarity to daily action.
Function recently announced a $298M Series B and is entering its next chapter of growth. As we scale, the quality and durability of our People systems, data, and insights will directly shape our ability to attract, retain, and support exceptional talent.
We are growing our team and seeking out world-class talent that deeply believes in our mission to positively impact global health, has a relentless bias toward action, and a growth mindset. Function fosters a collaborative and dynamic environment where every day we build the future.
Role
We’re looking for a Staff Test Automation Engineer to build AI-powered tools that help engineers test a complex codebase with existing bugs, inconsistent patterns, and gaps in test coverage. Your job is to make AI-generated tests trustworthy. You’ll build systems that understand code, identify meaningful test scenarios, generate executable tests, and distinguish intended behavior from existing defects. This requires strong software engineering skills, deep testing expertise, and practical experience building tools with large language models. As a Staff Engineer, you’ll own the technical direction of this capability, deliver its core components, and work across engineering teams to make it part of everyday development.
The ideal candidate is a seasoned engineer who is meticulous, self-motivated and thrives in a fast-paced environment. As a key member of our tech team, your expertise will be vital in shaping the future of our systems as we scale. This role is perfect for someone energetic, talented, and deeply committed to our mission of revolutionizing health technology.
Key Responsibilities
- Build AI-powered test generation tools. Develop tooling that uses source code, requirements, API contracts, existing tests, and bug reports to generate useful unit, integration, and regression tests.
- Test code that already contains defects. Create approaches that expose incorrect behavior without treating the current implementation as the source of truth. Clearly distinguish tests that document existing behavior from tests that verify intended behavior.
- Establish reliable expected outcomes. Design ways to determine what a test should assert, reconcile conflicting evidence, and flag ambiguity for human review.
- Turn failures into lasting coverage. Build workflows that reproduce reported bugs, reduce failures to clear test cases, and preserve regression tests after fixes.
- Build the supporting infrastructure. Create safe, reproducible environments for generated tests, including dependency isolation, fixtures, test data, and controlled execution.
- Evaluate test quality. Measure defect detection, mutation score, assertion quality, flakiness, and maintenance burden—not just the number of tests generated or lines covered.
- Integrate into developer workflows. Bring test generation and review into local development, pull requests, and CI with clear explanations and actionable feedback.
- Set technical direction. Define architecture, prioritize investments, mentor engineers, and establish standards for AI-assisted testing across teams.
Qualifications/Skills
To excel in this role, candidates must bring a unique combination of skills and experiences:
- Experience operating at Staff Engineer scope: leading ambiguous technical initiatives, making architectural decisions, and influencing multiple engineering teams.
- Deep expertise in automated testing, including unit, integration, contract, and end-to-end testing, with sound judgment about where each adds value.
- Strong programming skills and experience building production-quality developer tools, test frameworks, or engineering infrastructure.
- Hands-on experience building LLM-powered applications, including code context retrieval, structured outputs, tool use, and evaluation.
- Experience working with legacy or defect-prone systems, including isolating dependencies, diagnosing flaky tests, and introducing coverage incrementally.
- An understanding of the limitations of AI-generated code: plausible but incorrect assertions, brittle mocks, missing edge cases, and tests that reproduce implementation mistakes.
- Experience with CI/CD, reproducible environments, and safe execution of generated code.
- Clear communication and the ability to turn uncertain requirements into concrete technical decisions.
To be a strong fit, you embody our Core Values
- Ruthless Prioritization:
- We don’t let perfect get in the way of progress.
- We move quickly to drive value, not perfection.
- We prioritize what drives impact.

- We anticipate, initiate, and follow through.
