The English Department Engagement Assistant role supports the showcasing of the English Department to SMC students and external audiences, community-building among current English students, and promotion of the department to prospective students. The English Department Engagement Assistant will work closely with the English Department Chair to ensure that all engagement materials and events are aligned with departmental and institutional goals, approaches, and guidelines.
Hours per week: 5-7, Fall 2026 and Spring 2027 Semesters
Supervised by: English Department Chair
Job duties include:
• Planning and creating social media content for department accounts
• Designing, creating, and maintaining departmental bulletin boards and other physical displays
• Assisting with the planning and hosting of departmental events for current English students and/or recruitment of students to English BA programs
• Collaborating with English Department faculty on creation of materials and events based on the needs and goals of the department
• Communicating (both via email and in-person meetings) regularly with supervisor
The position offers opportunities to develop skills in communication, event planning, graphic design, marketing, and collaboration while representing the English Department in a positive and professional manner. The skills developed within this work-study position align with the NACE Competencies of communication, technology, and teamwork.
Required Qualifications:
• Possess strong written communication and visual design skills
• Have creative mindset with attention to detail
• Dependable, responsive, punctual, organized, and able to meet deadlines
• Comfortable using social media platforms in a professional manner
• Able to work independently and collaboratively, and to adapt work based on feedback
Preferred Qualifications:
• Interest in English (literature or professional writing) or the Humanities
• Experience creating social media content across platforms
• Familiarity with Canva
• Photography/video editing skills
• Experience with student involvement events on campus and/or with event planning
