Position Title: Phlebotomist-Specimen Processor
Schedule: 2:00pm-10:30pm
Shift: 2nd Shift
Compensation: $17.00-$24.04

Position Purpose: Performs a variety of tasks, including but not limited to phlebotomy; specimen receipt; labeling of laboratory specimens, centrifugation and aliquoting laboratory specimens; computer functions relating to specimen receipt/transfer, result inquiry. Prints, sorts and distributes laboratory reports; responds to inquiries for laboratory test status and results in accordance with prescribed procedures. Maintains confidentiality.

Essential Functions (list in order of importance)

  1. Receives specimens from nursing units, Emergency department and outpatient service areas; performs computer receiving and/or registration functions; Centrifuges and aliquots specimens when required. Makes sure reference lab specimen requirements are met. Addresses and resolves specimen or labeling problems. Responds to inquiries regarding status of laboratory tests, addition of tests to received samples and patient test results in a timely and courteous manner to authorized personnel. Performs required Laboratory Information System functions, including printing, sorting, distribution of patient reports and reference lab manifest reports. Maintains proficiency in Laboratory and Hospital Information Systems downtime back-up procedures.
  2. Maintains stock of phlebotomy and office supplies, reports shortages to supervisor. Maintains cleanliness of work area; disinfects countertops daily. Attends assigned in-services and meetings in the department and hospital.
  3. Collects capillary and venous specimens from inpatients and outpatients assuring the correct identity of the patient using aseptic techniques; handles patients efficiently and professionally. Maintains pager in working order and promptly responds to pages. Verifies and delivers specimen collection in Laboratory Information System and maintains collection records. Performs special phlebotomy procedures, including Bleeding Time. Precepts and assists in training phlebotomy team members in venipuncture and capillary collection techniques. In the Outpatient laboratory service area, checks physicians' orders against labels and registration desk orders, also may call physician to verify orders.

  • Performs both essential and marginal job functions in a safe manner as identified by Saint Anthony Hospital and the respective department while adhering to the Hospital’s confidentiality norms and standards. Actively and consistently demonstrates the core values of Saint Anthony Hospital in all interactions with others.
  • Assumes responsibility for knowing and maintaining established hospital and departmental objectives, policies/procedures including general sanitation, safety, environmental and infection control standards.
  • Participate in performance activities including problem identification, data collection, solution selection, implementation and evaluation. Also assists in the care and maintenance of departmental equipment and supplies as appropriate.
  • Participate in staff meetings and other in services, meetings or committees as required.
  • Operates, maintains, and monitors centrifuges, including required preventive maintenance and documentation

Requirements

  • Successful completion of a phlebotomy or medical assisting program
  • Minimum of 1 year experience in a hospital setting
  • Certified Phlebotomist preferred
  • Bilingual Spanish preferred
