Job Description

Professional Engineer is a mid-level position that will manage and oversee complex infrastructure and engineering development projects. This position will be based out of either the Meadville, PA or Erie, PA office location, depending on the location of the candidate. The Professional Engineer will demonstrate strong technical knowledge, sound judgment, and the ability to work both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team. Key responsibilities include project planning and coordination, technical analysis and review, and proactive engagement with stakeholders to ensure quality, compliance, and timely project delivery. This role also calls for effective problem-solving skills, leadership in guiding junior engineers, and a commitment to upholding professional standards and continuous improvement. Additional duties may include, but are not limited to:

  • Upholding all company, client, and governmental safety requirements throughout project lifecycles.
  • Maintaining effective communication with clients, team members, subcontractors, and management at all stages.
  • Assisting with the development of technical proposals, change orders, and comprehensive cost estimates, as well as defining clear scopes of work.
  • Collaborating with other departments for efficient project delivery and resolution of technical challenges.
  • Overseeing or assisting with the preparation and approval of project deliverables, including detailed reports, permit applications, and engineering work plans.
  • Reviewing civil engineering plans, specifications, calculations, and design documents for site development, grading, stormwater management, utilities, erosion and sediment control, and related infrastructure improvements.
  • Providing technical oversight during field investigations, construction observation, and project implementation to verify work is completed in accordance with approved plans, specifications, permits, and applicable codes or standards.
  • Managing the scheduling, coordinating with clients, subcontractors, and vendors for equipment procurement and rental.
  • Providing timely updates on project progress and communicating key milestones and features to both internal teams and clients.
  • Interpreting technical data, including tables, graphs, and figures, to inform decision-making and project adjustments.
  • Processing project submittals and maintaining comprehensive submittal logs for accurate project documentation.
  • Adherence to all company and client mandated safety requirements.
  • Frequent communication with clients, coworkers, subcontractors, regulatory agencies, and management.
  • Developing and/or assisting with proposals and change orders, including scope of services and cost estimates for projects.
  • Maintain most up to date project documentation and communicate changes to appropriate parties.
  • Willingness to travel to project sites as required, occasionally work out-of-town, if necessary, in all seasonal weather conditions.
  • Perform additional duties and responsibilities at time, if necessary, to achieve project and/or company goals.

The Professional Engineer may have the authority to direct and oversee other staff members, including S1, S2, or S3, and lower-level positions within the engineering department as appropriate for their assignments. While a Professional Engineer typically leads project teams and provides guidance to other staff working under their supervision, they must ensure that all significant client communications and any deviations from the established project scope are clearly communicated to the appropriate project manager, if applicable, or another senior manager before implementation.

The Professional Engineer has the authority to oversee all aspects of designated projects, ensuring that each phase is executed in line with project goals and standards. They may make key decisions related to project progress, resource allocation, and team coordination, provided these remain within the established project scope. The Professional Engineer is expected to exercise sound judgment, communicate significant developments to the appropriate senior manager, and support both project success and staff advancement.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • 5 - 15 years of demonstrated experience in civil engineering.
  • Bachelor or Master of Science degree in engineering, or other related degree in a technical field required.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license required to ensure compliance with industry standards and regulations.
  • Expertise with the site development discipline is required.
  • Oil and gas, geotechnical, or environmental engineering related experience is required.
  • Water and/or wastewater engineering related experience is preferred.
  • Advanced certifications or licenses in relevant fields are preferred.
  • Staff are encouraged to work towards obtaining applicable certifications and/or accreditations upon the recommendation of your supervisor.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

Individuals must be able to perform each essential duty at a minimum satisfactory level. The items below are representative of the knowledge, skills, characteristics and/or abilities required.

  • Proficiency with relevant software and applications such as GIS, AutoCAD, or similar for designing and drafting engineering plans.
  • Ability to interpret and analyze complex engineering data to produce actionable insights aligned with client and project objectives.
  • Solid understanding of regulatory frameworks and compliance requirements pertinent to the engineering field.
  • Ability to write technical reports, proposals and regulatory documents.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft 365.
  • Strong technical writing skills.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Ability to work extended hours when needed.
  • Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Collaborative skills with a strong work ethic.
  • Be dependable (regular attendance required).
  • Strong commitment to continuing education and professional development in the field.
  • A demonstrated ability to follow safety protocols and contribute to a safe work environment.

SCHEDULING

  • The standard work week is between 40 and 45 hours, unless otherwise approved by your supervisor.
  • Schedules are flexible; however, our core office hours are 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, Monday through Friday.
  • Weekend and evening hours may be required. Non-core hours will be communicated in advance when possible.

COMPENSATION

  • Compensation is commensurate with applicable work experience, education and licensing.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The physical demands described here represent those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this position. Employees must be able to lift up to 40 pounds and perform physically demanding tasks while working outdoors in adverse environmental conditions, including rugged terrain, remote locations, hot and cold temperatures, and inclement weather.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be regularly required to sit for long periods of time when performing office-related tasks and/or while driving for business purposes. Field-related tasks may require hiking long distances while carrying equipment and supplies with frequent walking, kneeling, bending, and lifting. Employees must be able to carry out the physical effort necessary to perform job-related tasks.
