Job Description

Keep the Fleet Moving. Solve Problems That Matter.

Are you an experienced mechanic who takes pride in diagnosing difficult problems and getting equipment back on the road?

Do you enjoy working independently, making sound decisions, and taking ownership of repairs from diagnosis through completion?

Beacon Recycling is looking for a Fleet Mechanic to maintain and repair our trucks, rolling stock, and on-road heavy equipment at our Grand Rapids facility. This is not a repetitive, limited-scope mechanic position. You will work on a wide variety of equipment, troubleshoot complex hydraulic, electrical, air, and mechanical systems, and help determine the best long-term solutions for our fleet.

The right person for this role is dependable, resourceful, and detail-oriented. You should be comfortable making decisions, prioritizing repairs, and communicating clearly with drivers, technicians, vendors, and leadership.

What You Will Work On

You will diagnose, repair, and maintain a variety of heavy-duty, on-road, and yard equipment, including:

  • Class 8 trucks and heavy-haul equipment
  • Refuse bodies and roll-off systems
  • Hydraulic and electrical control systems
  • Air and hydraulic braking systems
  • Chassis components
  • Multi-lift axles
  • Power take-off systems and components
  • Engines
  • Suspension, drivetrain, and steering systems
  • Heating and air-conditioning systems
  • Yard equipment and other rolling stock
What You Will Be Responsible For
  • Diagnose mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and air-system problems
  • Complete repairs safely, accurately, and efficiently
  • Perform preventive maintenance and USDOT inspections
  • Prioritize maintenance tasks to minimize equipment downtime
  • Respond to road-service needs when necessary
  • Identify recurring issues and recommend practical, long-term solutions
  • Order parts and help maintain an organized parts inventory
  • Evaluate equipment condition and provide input on repair-versus-replacement decisions
  • Help determine when fleet equipment has reached the end of its useful life
  • Train and mentor other technicians by sharing knowledge and best practices
  • Maintain accurate repair and maintenance records
  • Follow company safety standards and all applicable federal and state regulations
  • Represent Beacon Recycling professionally and ethically
What Success Looks Like

A successful Fleet Mechanic does more than complete assigned repairs. You will actively look for problems, take ownership of solutions, and help us improve the reliability and performance of the entire fleet.

You will be trusted to:

  • Think critically when the answer is not immediately obvious
  • Make informed recommendations
  • Communicate equipment concerns before they become major failures
  • Balance safety, repair quality, cost, and operational needs
  • Complete work thoroughly without requiring constant direction
  • Help other technicians develop their skills
What We Are Looking For
  • At least three years of professional maintenance or repair experience preferred
  • Experience working in a fleet, heavy-truck, diesel, or commercial shop environment preferred
  • Experience diagnosing and repairing hydraulic systems strongly preferred
  • Experience working on on-road heavy equipment and Class 8 trucks strongly preferred
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Strong mechanical troubleshooting and critical-thinking skills
  • Ability to operate Class 8 trucks and equipment, or willingness to learn
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Reliable attendance and a consistent work ethic
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
Additional Qualifications That Will Set You Apart
  • ASE Truck certifications
  • State certifications in steering, brakes, or suspension
  • Experience with refuse bodies, roll-off systems, PTOs, and multi-lift axles
  • Experience troubleshooting electrical and hydraulic control systems
  • Acetylene or electric-arc welding experience
  • Previous experience training or mentoring other technicians
  • Experience assisting with fleet planning or equipment replacement decisions
Work Environment

Work is performed in both indoor and outdoor shop environments. The position requires the ability to work around trucks and heavy equipment and in varying weather conditions.

This is an opportunity for an experienced mechanic who wants variety, responsibility, and a meaningful role in keeping a heavy-duty fleet safe, reliable, and productive.

5am-3pm Mon-Fri and some weekends when needed.
