Position Summary, Research Scientist (Quantum Technologies)

The Research Scientist will support the development and optimization of superconducting materials and processes in a 300mm semiconductor manufacturing environment. This role will conduct materials research, process development, and advanced characterization; collaborate with industry, academic, and government research partners; and help transition emerging technologies from research to commercialization. The position also supports customer engagements, technical reporting, and publications that advance NY Creates' leadership in next-generation semiconductor and quantum technologies.

Key Responsibilities

  • Establish familiarity with 300mm wafer-scale processing technologies and wafer fab operational software (SiView) to create and update process flows, in concert with 300 mm wafer fab process engineers.
  • Conduct research on superconducting materials and interfaces deposited at 300mm wafer scale, characterize them at room temperature with inline metrology equipment and applicable offline characterization techniques available on site (sputter-profiling XPS, TEM, cross-sectional SEM, SIMS), and partner with fab team to identify fruitful avenues for performance improvement, characterize such improvements, establish design rules, and develop process design kits for use by NY Creates partners (research labs, academia, companies).
  • Work with research partners (Brookhaven National Lab, AFRL, NIST, JPL, LPS, etc.) to obtain cryogenic characterization data to guide improvements of materials and processes.
  • Grow research partnerships with leading research institutions.
  • Support NY Creates engagements with commercial entities that seek to leverage NY Creates research to advance their business needs.
  • Help establish NY Creates as a leader in emerging technology areas through world-class research that aims to accelerate new technologies towards commercial adoption.
  • Work with the team and supervisor on creating reports, and publications.
  • Other reasonable duties as assigned.


Job Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications, Research Scientist (Quantum Technologies)

  • Ph.D. degree from college or University accredited by the US Department of Education or internationally recognized accrediting organization.
  • Research experience in one or more areas of the following: superconducting materials and superconducting devices, cryogenic characterization.

This position is contingent on the satisfactory completion of a background check; this position may require annual background checks.

Preferred Qualifications, Research Scientist (Quantum Technologies)

  • Ph.D. thesis work on superconducting materials and devices from top tier university
  • Track-record of publications in high impact factor journals, in areas relating to superconducting materials and devices for digital electronics and/or quantum computing.
  • Experience working in large teams
