Electrical Engineer III

Location: San Diego, CA

Department: Engineering

Job Type: Full-time

Summary

The Electrical Engineer will work closely with mechanical engineers, designers, procurement personnel, the manufacturing department, suppliers, and the sales team to develop, improve, and maintain products supporting the subsea industry. This role is responsible for the design, development, and support of electronics related to motion control, applying knowledge of engineering principles to design products such as underwater propulsion systems, electric rotary and linear actuators, electro-hydraulic systems, and power transmissions. This is a forward-facing position that includes daily managers meetings and customer interface as required.

Responsibilities
  • Responsible for all electrical design and implementation of subsea equipment, including thruster motors, actuators, and sensors.
  • Design and development of brushless motor drivers and supporting circuitry.
  • Support and implementation of subsea-rated electro-mechanical devices such as rotary or linear actuators, hydraulic pumps, propulsion thrusters, and various other assemblies.
  • Collaborate with other engineering disciplines to write and create specifications, analysis, and testing protocols.
  • Optimize existing designs to increase performance, reduce cost, and improve manufacturability.
  • Schematic capture, PCB layout, bill of materials, and prototype testing of new and/or updated designs.
  • Supervise and support electro-mechanical technicians during circuit assembly and final installation of boards and components into products.
  • Facilitate and provide direction to create detailed technical assembly and wiring guides for circuit board build and installation.
  • Participate and/or lead in customer technical discussions, design reviews, and project status.
  • Function as a project engineer as required to ensure custom jobs are on time, within budget, and meet technical requirements.
  • Facilitate and hold design review meetings with other team members to complete DFMEA and/or PFMEA documentation as required.
  • Support Manufacturing during assembly and testing of new or existing designs.
  • Serve as customer technical (field) support, typically not on site, but with the potential to travel as required.
Qualifications
  • Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or Computer Engineering.
  • 5–10 years of direct experience, with preference in the manufacturing industry.
Required Skills
  • Altium Designer schematic capture (preferred, not required).
  • Experience with 3-phase AC and DC motors and control techniques (brushless preferred).
  • Electro-mechanical power conversion experience (precision actuation, electric motors, and motor drive electronics).
  • Microcontroller circuit design and embedded software understanding.
  • Thorough understanding of embedded system and microcontroller concepts, including PWM, ADCs, DACs, and serial data interfaces.
  • Thorough understanding of common power stage design and control (gate drive circuitry, IGBT, MOSFET).
  • Ability to work independently and prioritize work when instructions are unclear or not yet defined.
  • Knowledge of design for manufacturing (DFM) principles, material types, and techniques.
  • Familiarity with process creation, ERP/MRP use, BOM creation, ECOs, and lifecycle management.
  • Demonstrates accuracy and thoroughness, impeccable attention to detail, and looks for ways to improve and promote quality.
  • Hands-on knowledge and ability to use laboratory equipment such as oscilloscopes, power supplies, serial communications, load cells, multi-meters, and PCB inspection and test.
  • Works and communicates effectively in a team setting, typical of a small-business environment.
  • Must be proficient in English.
  • MS Office Suite skills required.
Physical Demands
  • Able to frequently sit, stand, walk, use hands to finger, handle or feel, reach within arm’s length, stoop, kneel, crouch, talk, and hear.
  • Regularly required to sit for extended periods and use typical office equipment such as a computer, phone, and printer.
  • Able to periodically lift and/or move up to 10 pounds.
  • Vision requirements include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

Work Hours

Standard schedule: 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday

Compensation

$120,000 - $150,000; a higher range will be considered for exceptionally qualified candidates.
