The Senior Substation Engineer will be responsible for leading technical design activities, supporting project execution, and ensuring engineering deliverables meet customer requirements, safety standards, and regulatory expectations. Key responsibilities include:
- Reviewing and developing physical substation design packages, including conduit systems, grounding, control shelters, electrical arrangements, outdoor lighting, and equipment layouts.
- Performing and validating engineering calculations such as grounding studies, conduit fill analysis, pulling tension calculations, vehicle tracking, lighting calculations, lightning protection, arc-flash analysis, insulation coordination, and underground ampacity studies.
- Preparing and reviewing material descriptions and equipment documentation for major and minor substation components.
- Providing technical guidance and responding to engineering questions from construction teams, project managers, customers, and field personnel.
- Managing assigned project design activities, schedules, documentation, and coordination between engineering disciplines.
- Collaborating with internal teams and customer representatives to ensure designs align with project specifications and operational requirements.
- Supporting continuous improvement initiatives by identifying opportunities to enhance customer experience, engineering processes, and project delivery.
- Traveling periodically to customer locations and active construction sites for project meetings, inspections, testing, and technical support.
- Maintaining accurate engineering records, design documentation, and quality control standards throughout project execution.
The ideal candidate is an experienced electrical, mechanical, or civil engineer with strong knowledge of high-voltage substation design and a proven ability to manage complex engineering projects. Required qualifications include:
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
- 5+ years of experience in the physical design of high-voltage substations.
- Professional Engineer (PE) license required.
- Strong understanding of substation engineering principles, industry standards, and applicable safety requirements.
- Experience performing engineering calculations and reviewing technical design packages.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and technical calculation tools such as Mathcad.
- Familiarity with engineering software tools such as AutoCAD, CDEGS, CYMCAP, LitePro, FEAP, Southwire SAG/Ten, Alcoa, Vehicle Tracking, SAP-2000, or similar applications is preferred.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to collaborate effectively with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Ability to work independently, prioritize multiple projects, and deliver high-quality work within deadlines.
- Willingness to participate in ongoing technical training and professional development.
- Ability to travel occasionally, including overnight stays at active construction sites.
- Valid driver’s license and clean driving record required.
