Job Description
POSITION PURPOSE:
The Geographic Information Systems Technician I performs entry-level to routine technical GIS work in support of the regional 9-1-1 GIS program and other agency GIS-related activities, as assigned. Work involves assisting with GIS data entry, spatial data maintenance, map production, basic data validation, GPS data processing, and related records maintenance for Burleson, Grimes, Leon, Madison, Robertson, and Washington counties.
This position supports the maintenance of 9-1-1 GIS data in compliance with applicable standards, rules, policies, and guidelines. Work is performed under close to moderate supervision, with limited latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. This is a non-supervisory role and reports to the GIS Program Supervisor and/or designee.

GIS Data Entry
Mapping and GIS Production Support
- Creates and updates basic print maps, digital maps, graphics, diagrams, and related GIS products.
- Assists with preparing map packages, validation files, and other GIS materials used by public safety partners, PSAPs, counties, and internal staff.
- Supports routine GIS exports, data formatting, and file preparation for review and submission.
- Maintains organized GIS files, project folders, map documents, and supporting materials.

SUPERVISION:
Reports directly to the GIS Program Supervisor and/or designee through established supervisory channels.
This position performs routine GIS tasks under close to moderate supervision. Work is assigned, reviewed, and evaluated for accuracy, completeness, timeliness, and compliance with established GIS procedures and 9-1-1 program standards.
WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Work is performed primarily in an office environment, with occasional regional travel for meetings, training, field verification, data collection, and partner coordination. The employee regularly uses computers, GIS software, databases, GPS equipment, phones, printers, scanners, and standard office equipment. Work may require sitting for extended periods, standing, walking, reviewing maps and records, entering data, and communicating by email, phone, video conference, or in person.
Occasional field work may require walking on uneven surfaces, using GPS equipment, and verifying roads, structures, address points, or other geographic features. Outdoor work may involve exposure to heat, cold, rain, dust, insects, traffic, and rural terrain. The employee must occasionally lift, carry, or transport materials and equipment weighing up to 25 pounds.
The regular schedule is Monday through Friday during normal business hours. Rare evening, weekend, or out-of-town work may be required.
