Job Description

Description:

The Opportunity

RETTEW is seeking a Health and Safety Professional to join our Health, Safety, and Environment team. We are open to candidates at different career stages and will align the final title and level - Health and Safety Technician or Health and Safety Consultant - with the selected candidate's experience, technical depth, credentials, and ability to work independently.

This is a client-facing field and consulting role for someone who wants to help organizations protect their employees, strengthen safety programs, and meet regulatory requirements. You will work across a variety of industries and project environments, combining field observations, technical evaluation, training, documentation, and practical problem-solving.

Developing professionals will receive direction and opportunities to build breadth. More experienced professionals will lead assignments, advise clients, deliver advanced training, and help shape scopes, recommendations, and long-term client relationships.

What You'll Do

Depending on experience and project needs, you will:

  • Perform workplace safety assessments, compliance audits, field observations, and exposure evaluations at client and project sites.
  • Identify hazards, document findings, evaluate risk, and recommend practical corrective actions that support regulatory compliance and safer operations.
  • Support or lead industrial hygiene activities, including exposure monitoring, sampling, data collection, interpretation, and technical reporting.
  • Develop, review, and update written safety programs, policies, procedures, job hazard analyses, and site-specific safety plans.
  • Prepare and deliver engaging safety training for employees, supervisors, and managers. Training assignments may involve public speaking or instruction for extended periods, including sessions lasting up to six to eight hours in a day.
  • Support training and consulting related to topics such as confined space, electrical safety, lockout/tagout, fall protection, hazard communication, personal protective equipment, respiratory protection, and other OSHA requirements.
  • Research and interpret applicable federal, state, and local occupational health and safety regulations and industry standards.
  • Prepare clear reports, recommendations, training materials, proposals, scopes, and other client deliverables.
  • Communicate professionally with clients, employees, contractors, regulators, and multidisciplinary RETTEW teams.
  • Manage assigned tasks, schedules, budgets, documentation, and follow-up activities in accordance with project requirements.
  • Travel to client and project locations and work in industrial, commercial, construction, municipal, and other field environments.
  • For experienced candidates, lead complex assignments, mentor developing staff, support business development, and maintain trusted client relationships.

What We're Looking For

Required

  • Education or professional experience in occupational safety, industrial hygiene, environmental health and safety, engineering, science, construction, or a related field. A bachelor's degree is preferred; a relevant combination of education, training, and experience will be considered.
  • Relevant health and safety experience appropriate to the level of the role. Candidates with developing, intermediate, or advanced experience are encouraged to apply.
  • Working knowledge of occupational health and safety principles and the ability to learn, interpret, and apply OSHA requirements and recognized industry practices.
  • Ability and willingness to work regularly at client and project sites. The position may involve approximately 75% fieldwork and travel, including occasional overnight travel.
  • Ability and willingness to present safety information and conduct training for groups, including extended sessions that may last up to six to eight hours in a day.
  • Strong observation, documentation, analytical, organizational, and written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently within assigned authority and collaboratively with clients and multidisciplinary teams.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and the ability to learn project, reporting, and field-data systems.
  • Valid driver's license and reliable transportation to client and project locations.
  • Ability to wear required personal protective equipment and safely perform field activities that may include walking over uneven terrain, climbing stairs or ladders, entering active facilities or construction areas, and working indoors or outdoors in varying conditions.

Preferred

  • Experience providing health and safety consulting services to external clients.
  • Experience conducting OSHA compliance audits, industrial hygiene sampling, incident investigations, or job hazard analyses.
  • Experience developing or delivering safety training, including confined space or electrical safety topics.
  • Relevant credentials or training such as OSHA 30-Hour, HAZWOPER, ASP, CSP, CIH, CHMM, or equivalent certifications.
  • Experience preparing proposals, estimating scopes and fees, managing projects, or developing client relationships.
  • Experience in industrial, construction, manufacturing, energy, municipal, or related operating environments.

Grow With the Role

The position is designed to support growth from field execution and technical development through independent consulting, project leadership, client advisory work, and mentoring. The selected candidate will be placed at the level that best matches demonstrated capability and will have opportunities to broaden technical knowledge, pursue relevant credentials, and build long-term client relationships.

Work Environment

Workplace Designation: Hybrid, with substantial field and client-site responsibilities

Location: Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania

The role combines office-based planning and documentation, virtual and in-person client interaction, classroom-style training, and work at active client or project locations. Schedules may vary based on client needs, travel, field conditions, and training assignments.
