Multi-Skilled Technician, Training Coordinator

POSITION SUMMARY
-
Performs the patient care and routine clinical and administrative tasks associated with Multi-skilled Technician role in support of physicians and non-physician providers in clinic. This position is responsible for assisting management in the training of Medical Assistant and Multi-skilled technician team members.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND ACCOUNTABILITIES
- Clinic Coverage:
- Facilitate patient flow in the clinic by assuring patient check-in processes are complete, calling for patients in the main waiting room and directing them accordingly within the clinic.
- Greet and prepare patients for provider or imaging exams, providing appropriate gown, shorts, etc.
- May complete patient check-out or schedule imaging or follow-up appointments as requested (i.e., return to work/school/sport, physical therapy orders, etc).
- Provide patients with documentation pertaining to the visit and ensure that documentation is appropriately captured for the patient record.
- Maintain exam room supply stock and keep exam rooms clean and disinfected between patients as needed. Inform supervisor when supplies need to be reordered for the supply room.
- May perform various tasks such as copying, faxing, scanning and filing documents to ensure a complete and accurate patient record.
- Assists by preparing electronic images or documents for providers based on individual preferences to facilitate appointments.
- Update patient information in the EMR. Provides cross coverage as assigned.
- Monitor clinic flow to ensure that no patient is neglected or delayed unreasonably. Communicate with patients, the patient’s family, and staff to keep them informed of delays in the clinic schedule.
- May respond to patient concerns or questions, and communicate in a helpful and objective manner, involving the manager as appropriate.
- May prepare and/or sterilize medical instruments. Clean and disinfect medical equipment when required.
- Provides cross coverage as assigned.
- May verify patient insurance coverage as needed.
- Performs other duties in support of providers, staff, and leadership.
- Clinical Documentation:
- Obtain and document the patient's vital signs such as height, weight, blood pressure as required.
- Review and document patient information including allergies, medications, fall risk, immunizations, pharmacy preference and other health or social history as assigned.
- May provide and document the distribution of patient educational material (such as smoking cessation).
- Patient Care:
- Perform patient care duties including removing wound dressing, sutures, or staples, etc. as trained and directed by providers.
- Apply clean dressing as trained and directed by provider. Provide patient education regarding wound care.
- Provide care in the clinic setting with patients requiring immobilization including applying, removing and assessing the need for change of all types of orthopedic casts and immobilization devices. Based on provider orders, provide fitting and application of various DME and orthopedic assistive devices.
- Based on provider orders, perform fitting and application of various DME and orthopedic assistive devices.
- Educate patients and family members regarding application/use of various DME and orthopedic assistive devices.
- Educate patients and family members regarding billing for DME products and ensure that required documentation is completed.
- Prepare supplies and draw up injections for providers.
- May perform specimen collection, preparation, and documentation according to proper procedures including venipuncture.
- May support providers with PRP procedures including equipment preparation, blood draws, and sample preparation and handling of biohazard waste.

Train and Support Staff:
- Coordinate on-the-job training and schedules for newly hired medical assistants and multi-skilled technicians with awareness of the depth of resources to provide coverage for Orthopedic One providers.
- Provides training for staff on skills such as casting/splinting as well as annual skills re-assessment. Schedule and conduct routine clinical competency reviews.
- Assists leadership with ordering and organization of clinic supplies and DME inventory, including distribution of stock, and coordinates regular inventory counts of DME products.
- May provide support for scheduling routine maintenance for clinic equipment (cast saws, Exos machine) and care and maintaining clinical items such as scales, stadiometers, patient care kits and other items as needed.
- Provide assistance as needed with accurately plotting physician clinic assignments each week for Supervisor/Manager distribution to all staff.
- Proactively plans and communicates system access/set up needed for new Medical Assistant and Multi skilled technician team member to various information systems including but not limited to hospital system EMR’s, Health Information Exchange, etc.
- Work with Supervisor and peers in training to provide constructive feedback to facilitate learning. This includes, but may not be limited to, review of competencies demonstrated using training checklists, obtaining feedback from physician offices, and providing opportunities to practice various job responsibilities and accountabilities for skills development.
- Maintains knowledge of provider preference and special forms required for coverage as well as training Medical Assistants and MSTs on tasks such as chart preparation.
- Other duties as assigned by the management.

- Seek out assignments, added duties, or opportunities to learn when assigned work is complete, as patient census or workload permits, or to otherwise fill down time productively.
- Propose new ideas, make suggestions, and seek opportunities to improve processes or workflow through appropriate channels.
- Attempt to problem solve when assigned work is disrupted, equipment is down, etc. before involving supervisor.

Provides assistance and support to leadership in implementing policies and procedures as necessary.

Actively participates in training, and conducting day to day work activity by adhering to all policies and procedures as enumerated in compliance and risk management programs.

QUALIFICATIONS
-
Education, Experience, Certification and Licensure Requirements:
-
High School diploma and completion of an accredited Medical Assisting program or a minimum of one year of equivalent experience is required. Other education may be deemed appropriate alternatives such as LPN or ATC with state licensure in Ohio. Certification as a Medical Assistant is required for unlicensed candidates and ASOP, ROT certification is desired. Previous experience in orthopedic specialty preferred. Customer service experience and basic computer skills required including keyboarding, electronic scheduling, data entry of patient information and use of email. Use of various office technology solutions including fax, scanning, printing required. Must maintain CPR/AED certification. Previous leadership experience, including responsibility for training staff, is strongly preferred.
