Westhills Equine Veterinary Services is seeking two enthusiastic veterinary students to join our team for the Spring and Summer of 2027.

More than a summer job, this is an opportunity to learn alongside experienced equine veterinarians and RVTs in a progressive practice intentionally designed to support hands-on learning, clinical mentorship, and professional growth. Throughout the summer, you'll gain meaningful experience across equine hospital medicine, reproduction, sports medicine, preventive care, and urgent care while developing the confidence and skills to prepare you for clinical practice.

About the Role

As a Summer Veterinary Student, you'll work alongside our veterinarians, RVTs and assistants to support patient care while building practical clinical skills in a supportive learning environment.

You'll gain experience across multiple areas of equine practice while receiving direct teaching and progressively greater responsibility as your knowledge, confidence, and competency develop.

You'll assist with patient care, diagnostics, treatments, and clinical workflow while learning how a collaborative equine hospital functions - from outpatient appointments to reproduction services, hospitalized patients and urgent care.

Every day offers opportunities to ask questions, participate in cases, and gain experience that extends well beyond the classroom.

You'll have opportunities to:

• Safely handle and restrain equine patients
• Assist with physical examinations, treatments, procedures, and nursing care under supervision
• Prepare equipment and patients for diagnostics and procedures
• Participate in sample collection and laboratory diagnostics within your level of training and supervision
• Assist with medical records and clinical documentation
• Support hospital, reproduction, and outpatient appointment services
• Participate in clinical rounds, case discussions, and teaching opportunities
• Help maintain an organized, efficient hospital environment as part of completing patient care

What We're Looking For

Required

• Currently enrolled in a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) program
• Completion of at least first year prior to Summer 2027
• Strong equine handling skills
• Eligible to work in Alberta and meet any applicable ABVMA student registration requirements

What We Offer

This is a paid, full-time seasonal position designed to provide meaningful clinical experience while preparing students for future careers in equine practice.

Compensation: $16–18/hour, depending on year of training, equine experience, and demonstrated practical skills.

Location

Westhills EVS is located just 10 minutes west of Stony Plain and 30 minutes west of Edmonton, with easy access from Highway 16.

Please note that reliable transportation is required, as our clinic is not accessible by public transit.
