Position Overview

The Composting Site Operator is an integral member of the Agri-Cycle team, based at our composting facility in North Hartland, Vermont, which is operated in partnership with the Greater Upper Valley Solid Waste District (GUVSWD). This role is responsible for carrying out all aspects of day-to-day composting operations per established best management practices, including sourcing and obtaining amendments, receiving and processing incoming organic material, recipe building, and ensuring site cleanliness and odor/vector control.

The Composting Site Operator is a part-time, on-site position that works closely with the Agri-Cycle team, including the Composting Site Consultant, Bob Spencer and Senior Operations Manager, Bob Cushman based on site, to identify and implement operational improvements. The site operator role as it currently stands reports to the Senior Operations Manager. Ten hours weekly initially.

Production & Operations

Assist with all material logistics and relevant best management practices as provided by Consultant Bob Spencer, including sourcing and collecting amendments within a 50-mile radius to ensure adequate supply on site, prepping in advance for incoming food scrap loads, recipe mixing upon receipt, and routine execution of timely windrow turning, aerated static pile (ASP) processing (when relevant), screening, and testing, to ensure efficient and consistent production output and adherence to state guidelines (specifically, the process to further reduce pathogens (PFRP).

Quality Control, Record Keeping & Product Sales Support

Monitor and record key pile metrics on a schedule following the SOPs laid out by consultant Bob Spencer to maintain product quality and ensure finished compost meets established market and PFRP specifications.

Equipment & Facility Maintenance

Maintain site cleanliness and equipment readiness by adhering to established daily operational checklists and proactive preventive maintenance practices.

Required Qualifications

• 1-3 years of relevant, hands-on experience, and/or formal operator training from the State of Vermont or equivalent coursework (September 28th training is assumed to be the date of meeting this requirement per state law).

• Experience operating heavy equipment, including loaders and skid steers

• Ability and willingness to follow established SOPs for compost recipe development and processing, using a combination of Aerated Static Pile (when relevant) and open windrow systems

Preferred qualifications:

• Willingness to assist with local food waste collections and a holder of a Class B driver’s license
