Job Description
To assist patients in obtaining available medical benefits while securing reimbursement on behalf of the Hospital.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Coordinates financial counseling programs at all campuses, monitoring queues and in-house list; ensuring that appropriate financial counseling activities occur for uninsured and underinsured patients. This will include providing updates to designated Hospital staff regarding financial counseling status of in-house patients and those whose discharge planning is contingent on insurance application status.
- For those patients that do not qualify for Medicaid or other insurance, provides counseling on the charity care program.
- On a monthly basis, prepares a detailed reporting of all Medicaid applications, rejections and approvals for all campuses, utilizing system reports of financial counselor queue activity.
- Reviews the Long Stay and High Dollar patients with the Mental Health Department on a weekly basis. This ensures that all patients have some financial plan to cover their hospital stay.
- Monitors discharged patients who are not seen by a Financial Counselor to determine possible eligibility for coverage for the Affordable Care Act, Medicaid or Charity Care.
- For discharged patients, not seen by a financial counselor, makes contact to determine if any insurance coverage is available. Along with Financial Counselor, works to identify potential for payment and follows up diligently.
- Responds to all patient and staff requests for assistance promptly, courteously, and professionally. Deals diplomatically and sympathetically with patients and family members, overcoming language barriers, reluctance and suspicion.
- Exercises good judgment, making decisions promptly and adjusting rapidly to changing situations and demands. Works cooperatively with hospital staff at all levels, and both campuses, understanding that he/she will be called to patient areas on an unscheduled, as-needed basis. Accepts responsibility for own actions and productivity.
- Promotes/portrays a high level of professionalism, both technically and personally. Possesses strong work ethic and exhibits optimism. Adheres to the dress policy and maintains a professional appearance and positive attitude.

QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS
EXPERIENCE
- 3 - 5 years working with insurance and government agency medical claims payments in a Hospital or social service setting.
EDUCATION
- High School Diploma required. Associate’ s Degree preferred.
LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS
- Notary License desirable
OTHER
- Knowledge of: N.Y.S. Social Service application guidelines. Program guidelines for: SSI, Heap, SSD, Food Stamps, temporary housing assistance Ability to call, write and present a Fair Hearing.
