About This Position

Purpose: To assist and oversee the pastry and bread production of GreenStar’s Central Kitchen operation. To work with the Bakery Manager to meet objectives for sales, margin, and product development and to prepare items that keep cases fully stocked and appealing. Effectively supervise bakery staff, while holding them accountable for production goals, with support from the bakery manager. Serve as a member of the Prepared Foods Management Team responsible for providing leadership and vision to help achieve organizational goals. Status: Level IV, Assistant Staff, Supervised by Bakery Manager

Responsibilities:

Production Bakery

  • Oversee and assist with the daily production of both bread and pastry for retail, catering, and wholesale orders.
  • Ensure that Greenstar offers a wide variety of baked goods for sale, is fully stocked, attractive, and with accurate pricing, supporting the Bakery Manager
  • Ensure that Greenstar offers a wide variety of on trend products, including vegan and wheat free options.
  • Assist Bakery Manager in researching and developing new recipes.
  • Prepare and ensure that staff are creating all recipes according to established procedures.
  • Cleans and maintains work areas, utensils, and equipment and notifies supervisor of any maintenance issues.
  • Brings day-to-day problems and needs/concerns to supervisor for feedback and instruction as needed
  • Oversee other members of the Bakery staff in the absence of the Bakery Manager
  • Be a role model in food preparation techniques and internal customer service.
  • Inventory and order products, ensuring adequate amounts of products/supplies.
  • Receive and stock orders as needed, or ensure proper receiving and stocking by Bakery staff.
  • Ensure adherence to product prohibitions and restrictions (see Policy Book Appendix 3).

CUSTOMER SERVICE

  • Assist customers with product questions in a prompt, and courteous manner, referring them to other staff when necessary.
  • Work as part of a team to develop a hospitable department space that feels welcoming to all.
  • Participate in customer service trainings, all-staff meetings, department meetings, and OBM Huddles to stay informed.
  • Knowledgeable about all Bakery products.
  • Assist retail staff, customers, and catering clients with product questions, in a prompt, friendly, courteous manner, referring them to other staff when necessary.
  • Help customers place special orders.

DEPARTMENT MAINTENANCE/SAFETY

  • Work with Bakery Manager in ensuring food prep and storage areas are maintained in sanitary, orderly condition meeting health department standards.
  • Work with Bakery Manager ensuring proper storage and labeling procedures.
  • Work with Bakery Manager with preparation for periodic department inventory.
  • Work with Bakery Manager in ensuring careful handling of hazardous equipment through procedures and training
  • Work with Bakery Manager in maintaining accurate, up to date prices and product codes for all bakery items in scanning and scale systems.
  • Work with Bakery Manager in maintaining department equipment in working order.
  • Also, research and recommend major equipment repair or replacement.
  • Be conscientious of, and assist with training of staff in proper lifting techniques.
  • Be mindful of potential hazards to customers and employees. Take time to correct hazards when noted.

PERSONNEL

  • Work with Bakery Manager in ensuring on-the-job training.
  • Evaluate ongoing staff training needs.
  • Work with Bakery Manager in scheduling hours for Bakery department within payroll allocation

SAFETY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Follow GreenStar’s safety rules.
  • Assist other employees in safety needs.
  • Report unsafe equipment and conditions.
  • Participate in safety training programs, assist with accident investigation.
  • Perform other tasks as assigned to ensure a safe and healthy work environment.

STOREWIDE AND OTHER DUTIES

  • Attend Human Resources trainings, all-staff meetings, department meetings, and OBM Huddles to stay informed.
  • Read GreenStar publications to stay informed.
  • Respect and comply with storewide personnel policies.
  • Describe membership benefits, and how membership investment is made.
  • Adhere to scheduled shifts.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS

  • Communication – effective interpersonal communication with team members.
  • Excellent production baking skills.
  • Experience developing new products for large batch production.
  • 2-4 years in a kitchen leadership position.
  • Experience in production end of bakery; decorating skills required
  • Demonstrated ability to follow through on commitments.
  • Open to input/feedback on work performance.
  • Open to giving input/feedback on Bakery department.
  • Self-Driven/Motivated throughout shift.
  • Knowledge or interest in learning about natural foods, produce, local farms.
  • Demonstrated ability to handle multiple demands, stay calm, and prioritize.
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds continuously.
