About the role

Reporting to the Director, Engineering and R&D, the Product Development Engineer is responsible for the technical discovery, design, validation, and continuous improvement of new and existing products.

This role supports products from early concept and feasibility through commercialization and lifecycle improvement, working in close partnership with Engineering Technicians, Operations, Quality, and Marketing. The focus is on building robust, manufacturable, compliant products that meet customer needs while advancing AMBICO’s long‑term innovation strategy.

What you'll do

  • Participate in the technical research, design, and development of new and existing products from concept through commercialization.
  • Translate product requirements and market insights into viable engineering concepts and validated designs.
  • Generate, evaluate, and iterate on multiple design solutions using sound engineering analysis and risk-based decision-making.
  • Develop 3D CAD models and work closely with the Engineering Technician to produce accurate, controlled drawings and documentation.
  • Plan and execute product testing (internal and third‑party), analyze results, and incorporate findings into iterative development cycles.
  • Prepare and maintain complete technical documentation, including design guides, specifications, test reports, certifications, and training materials.
  • Support new product launches and early manufacturing ramp‑up by providing hands-on technical support and issue resolution.
  • Identify and implement product improvements and cost‑reduction opportunities while maintaining quality, compliance, and performance requirements.
  • Collaborate cross‑functionally with Operations, Quality, Marketing, and Sales to ensure products are manufacturable, compliant, and market‑ready.
  • Contribute to AMBICO’s product development portfolio and stage‑gate process, aligning technical work with R&D and innovation strategy.
  • Stay current with industry standards, competitor products, and emerging technologies, proactively recommending innovation opportunities.

Qualifications

Education: Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (mechanical or civil preferred) with at least 2 years of experience in the field.

  • Strong engineering fundamentals with the ability to move from concept through validated design in a manufacturing environment
  • Experience with sheet metal fabrication, mechanical design or similar engineered products.
  • Experience producing design documentation, technical reports, and specifications
  • Solid analytical and problem-solving skills, including the ability to evaluate trade-offs and manage technical risk
  • Experience managing multiple development initiatives and projects simultaneously
  • Keen interest in product improvement and innovation
  • Willingness and ability to travel, primarily within North America, as required
  • Meets or has the ability to meet the requirements for P.Eng license.

Preferences

  • Bilingual (English and French)
  • Experience with parametric 2D and 3D CAD, Solid Edge preferred
  • Strong Microsoft Excel skills; VBA experience considered an asset
  • Familiarity with stage-gate or structured product development methodologies

WORK CONDITIONS:

  • This role is primarily office-based, with regular interaction across departments, including plant operations.
  • Occasional testing site visits and site walkthroughs may be required.
  • May involve occasional travel
  • Extended periods of computer use.

This position is normally on site at least 3 days a week.
