This position is responsible for providing services of both a technical and non-technical nature in the laboratory service areas. Works with considerable independence to perform routine and complex laboratory tests in all assigned departments of the clinical laboratory to provide physicians with rapid and accurate laboratory test results. May perform procedures across the major areas of the laboratory or concentrate in one area such as Blood Bank, Chemistry, Hematology, Immunology or Microbiology.
I. Major Responsibilities:
1. Follows established procedures to perform all lab tests (including all levels of complexity as defined by CLIA) to obtain data for use in the diagnosis and treatment of disease.
2. Assesses acceptability of specimens for analysis and maintains integrity of the specimens throughout the entire testing process.
3. Performs set up on all laboratory equipment, instruments and apparatus required for specific laboratory testing. Performs routine cleaning and preventative maintenance to ensure continued functioning of equipment. Documents all maintenance procedures performed in a timely and accurate manner.
4. Operates all laboratory equipment per standard operating procedures to ensure accurate patient test results.
5. Performs basic troubleshooting, repair, and modification of a wide range of complex instrumentation in assigned laboratory areas.
6. Performs calibration procedures on instrumentation per departmental procedures in an accurate and timely manner.
7. Adheres to the established quality control policies and procedures in order to guarantee the reliability of data.
8. Informs the appropriate supervisor or designee of unusual or unexpected test results after verification and accessing validity of the original test results.
9. Recognizes critical and /or life-threatening results and notifies the appropriate clinical personnel per hospital policy.
10. Assists with the resolution of procedural problems encountered in the daily workload; notifies the supervisor of unusual or recurring problems. Appropriately documents all actions taken.
11. Maintains all records and documentation needed to comply with JCAHO, CAP, AABB, Medicare, Medicaid, and HealthAlliance laboratory regulations.
12. Assists in the orientation and instruction of new employees and students in clinical laboratory operations and procedures.
13. May assist supervisor in preparation for Department and Laboratory wide inspections.
14. Obtains and processes specimens from patients as required using established techniques.
15. May assist the lab supervisor in the institution of new medical laboratory procedures and techniques.
16. Assists with maintaining sufficient inventory of material, supplies and equipment for performance of duties. Notifies appropriate person when supply levels fall to reorder levels.
17. Complies with laboratory policies and procedures and all health and safety requirements.
Standard Staffing Level Responsibilities:
1. Complies with established departmental policies, procedures and objectives.
2. Attends variety of meetings, conferences, seminars as required or directed.
3. Demonstrates use of Quality Improvement in daily operations.
4. Complies with all health and safety regulations and requirements.
5. Respects diverse views and approaches, demonstrates Standards of Respect, and contributes to creating and maintaining an environment of professionalism, tolerance, civility and acceptance toward all employees, patients and visitors.
6. Maintains, regular, reliable, and predictable attendance.

License/Certification/Education:
Required:
1. Associate degree in a laboratory science (chemical or biological science) or medical laboratory technology from an accredited institution.
Preferred:
1. MLT (ASCP) certification.
Experience/Skills:
Required:
1. Professional knowledge of medical technology principals and methodologies sufficient to perform clinical laboratory procedures.
2. Ability to endure periods of heavy workload and stress.
3. Ability to accept constructive feedback and initiate appropriate actions to correct situations.
4. Ability to coordinate eyes and hands to fingers rapidly and accurately in making precise movements with speed.
5. Ability to use computer-based systems to record, tract, review, and interpret test results.
Preferred:
1. Minimum one (1) year of clinical laboratory experience.
Unless certification, licensure or registration is required, an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility listed in this description may be substituted for the above requirements.
Department-specific competencies and their measurements will be developed and maintained in the individual departments. The competencies will be maintained and attached to the departmental job description. Responsible managers will review competencies with position incumbents.
