Substitute Teacher at Archbishop Damiano School – Westville, New Jersey
About This Position
We are seeking a dedicated and adaptable Substitute Teacher to join our team. In this role, you will support students with disabilities (ages 3 to 21) by delivering a comprehensive educational program that promotes independence, dignity, and personal growth. You will work with students who have mild to severe disabilities and collaborate with classroom teams to maintain a positive and inclusive learning environment.
To succeed, you should demonstrate strong classroom management skills, effective teaching practices, and the ability to create meaningful learning experiences. Our ideal candidate is organized, communicative, and committed to student success.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Implement lesson plans and curriculum provided by the regular teacher.
- Maintain classroom routines and ensure a safe, respectful environment.
- Supervise students in classrooms and common areas (hallways, cafeteria).
- Take attendance and maintain accurate daily records.
- Communicate effectively with staff and compile a summary report for the returning teacher.
- Ensure classroom cleanliness and organization.
- Comply with all school policies and procedures.
GENERAL DEFINITION AND CONDITIONS OF WORK:
Work is performed in a school setting, often in collaboration with paraprofessionals. Duties may include assisting students with mobility needs and occasional lifting of up to 50 pounds. The role requires standing, walking, bending, and other physical activities as needed. Additional responsibilities may be assigned.
REQUIREMENTS:
- High school diploma or equivalent qualification (required).
- Bachelor’s degree in Education or related field (preferred).
- Valid NJ Substitute Teacher Certification.
- DOE-approved fingerprint background check (required).
- Minimum of 2 years’ experience in a similar role.
- Strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to follow written and verbal instructions and adapt to changing classroom environments.
