The Position

Currently, there is one (1) full-time vacancy in the Public Services Department scheduled to work forty (40) hours per week. Work hours may be either Monday through Friday from either 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.; or 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The schedule and assignment will vary depending on the needs of the City including potential evening work, weekend assignments, and/or special events. This is an FLSA non-exempt position and is entitled to overtime.

Your Impact & Contributions

  • Develops, supervises, evaluates and participates in various programs and activities related to the maintenance and operation of the City’s park and/or landscape infrastructure;
  • Plans, develops and administers contracts for tree maintenance, landscape maintenance and construction, vegetation fire suppression, encroachments, flat work, electrical maintenance, irrigation design, open space maintenance, rodent control, park and playground inspection, and other activities related to the construction and maintenance and operation of parks, landscapes, sports fields, and facilities;
  • Develops, supervises, evaluates and participates in various programs and activities related to the maintenance and operation of the City’s sports fields, complexes and related facilities;
  • Plans, develops and administers contracts for landscape maintenance, rodent control, technical irrigation, electrical maintenance, and other activities related to the maintenance and operation of sports fields and facilities;
  • Assist in the planning, organizing, coordinating, and administering goals, objectives, policies, priorities and capital improvement projects to maintain and improve infrastructure and facilities within the City;
  • Plan, organize, administer, review and evaluate the work of skilled, semi-skilled and unskilled support and contract staff, either directly or through contract personnel; provide training and policy guidance and interpretation to same;
  • Ensure that contractors and vendors provide a high degree of service to both internal and external customers that support achieving the department’s and the City’s mission, objectives and values;
  • Coordinates and personally participates in the set-up and clean-up of City facilities for reserved gatherings and special events;
  • Work with contractors, homeowners, consultants, and other agencies regarding horticultural, arboricultural, and entomological practices;
  • Enforces safety regulations, practices and procedures related to the maintenance and cleaning of facility exteriors and City rights-of-way;
  • Works with other departments, division, outside agencies, and the public regarding encroachment, nuisance, safety, construction, and maintenance issues; investigates risk management complaints, issues and claims;
  • Responds to emergency calls; installs emergency traffic control; and
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

The Public Services Department oversees the upkeep of public buildings, streets, landscape right-of-ways, storm drains, and the urban forestry. Some of the major activities include: street repairs, weed abatement, graffiti removal, fleet maintenance, park maintenance, golf course maintenance, commercial landscape plan checks and inspection, tree trimming, building maintenance, storm drain maintenance, street striping and signage, coordinating community volunteer projects and special event support.

IDEAL CANDIDATE

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with numerous deadlines.
  • Strong knowledge and experience in landscape maintenance practices specifically in regards to sports fields, parks, medians and slopes.
  • Someone who can handle a variety of tasks at once, is detailed-oriented and is accurate in their work.
  • Someone who can communicate effectively and diplomatically with contractors, homeowners, consultants, and other agencies.
  • Good oral and written communication skills with knowledge of writing and standard format for reports and correspondence.
  • Must be able to work independently and in a group environment.


QUALIFICATIONS

Equivalent to completion of two (2) years of college or technical school training or possession of an Associate of Arts degree in horticulture, park maintenance, or construction management, or a related field supplemented with four (4) years of experience in the maintenance of a variety of municipal infrastructure, landscape, and hardscape, including contract administration experience. Additional experience may be substituted for the education requirement on a year-for-year basis up to a maximum of two (2) years.

LICENSE OR CERTIFICATE

Must possess and maintain a valid California class C driver’s license and a satisfactory driving record. Driving is an essential function of the classification.

Possession of a State of California Pest Control Advisor’s License, Qualified Applicator Certificate or license, and/or certification or training in any maintenance and construction specialties related to the work are desirable.
