About This Position

POSITION PURPOSE

  • The Lead Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) is a professional member of the Laboratory team responsible for performing complex, non-routine laboratory testing, specimen collection, quality control, and instrument maintenance, ensuring accurate documentation of all work in accordance with Laboratory policies and regulatory standards. The Lead MLS demonstrates sound judgment in resolving methodological issues, identifies contributing factors to problems, and directs the work of other laboratory staff.
  • In addition, the Lead MLS oversees all operations of the Laboratory specimen send-out area, including supervising MLS staff, managing workflows, and ensuring timely and accurate processing and shipment of reference laboratory specimens. The Lead also provides coaching, guidance, and training to staff as needed, maintaining high standards of performance, compliance, and quality.

MINIMUM EDUCATION REQUIRED

  • Bachelor's Degree in: Medical Technology, Clinical Laboratory Science, Medical Laboratory Science, or
  • Biological/Chemical/Physical Science degree acceptable to CLIA

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

  • One to two years as MLS preferred

LICENSES / CERTIFICATIONS REQUIRED

  • Current registration as a Medical Technologist or Medical Laboratory Scientist, issued by the ASCP or equivalent.
  • Categorical certification by the ASCP or equivalent for a specific departmental category, (i.e. Chemistry, Microbiology, etc.), or the ability to obtain certification within 1 year is preferred.

SUPERVISES

  • Medical Laboratory Scientists working in the send-out department.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES REQUIRED

  • Ability to read, write, hear, speak, and comprehend the English language.

PRINCIPLE ACCOUNTABILITIES AND ESSENTIAL DUTIES

  1. Collect venous and capillary blood specimens following established procedures.
  2. Instruct patients on the collection of non-blood specimens, as required.
  3. Perform testing in Blood Bank, Chemistry, Urinalysis, Hematology, Hemostasis, Immunology, and Microbiology sections, including proficiency testing samples, in accordance with Laboratory policies, procedures, and quality dashboards.
  4. Maintain proficiency with all procedures on the Laboratory test list within the defined timeframe.
  5. Perform and maintain all competencies required by regulatory and accrediting agencies.
  6. Analyze quality control materials for each procedure, documenting results and corrective actions when necessary. Ensure controls meet quality standards before resuming patient testing.
  7. Document all changes in reagents lots or materials according to departmental procedures for quality tracking and troubleshooting.
  8. Maintains instrumentation and equipment per scheduled maintenance procedures, documenting all activities appropriately.
  9. Maintain a clean and safe, including end of shift disinfection of work surfaces.
  10. Transcribe results and enter them into the Laboratory information system accurately and in a timely manner.
  11. Receive and document verbal orders from licensed independent practitioners for orders specific to departmental services.
  12. Immediately report critical values according to Laboratory standard operating procedures.
  13. Participate in the orientation, training, and mentoring of students and new employees as directed.
  14. Oversee daily operations of the send-out testing department, ensuring accurate processing, packaging, and shipment of reference laboratory specimens.
  15. Maintain inventory of all reference laboratory kits and supplies, ensuring timely replenishment.
  16. Provide coaching, guidance, and on-demand education to staff to resolve performance or procedural issues.
