About This Position
Core Duties and Responsibilities
The School Nurse promotes and maintains a safe and healthy environment for students and staff, contributes to a positive learning climate, and serves as an essential member of the school team. The nurse assesses student health needs, provides appropriate direct care, and identifies students requiring further medical evaluation or support. The nurse ensures compliance with South Carolina immunization requirements, monitors communicable disease concerns within the school community, and coordinates appropriate prevention and response efforts.
The School Nurse conducts health screenings as required and makes referrals to relevant agencies or healthcare providers, following up on students with identified health concerns. The nurse responds to medical emergencies and provides first aid, triage, and crisis intervention. Health education is provided to students and staff both informally and formally, supporting healthy behaviors and self-management where appropriate. The nurse works to improve attendance by addressing health issues early, coordinating care for students with chronic conditions, and assisting families in accessing appropriate healthcare resources.
The School Nurse counsels students regarding health needs and wellness, offers appropriate age guidance, and supports parents through communication by phone, meetings, written notices, or home follow-up when necessary. The nurse serves as a health resource for the school community, sharing information related to student health concerns, public health matters, medical conditions, and their possible academic impacts. The nurse also provides healthcare consultation to school staff, participates in professional development activities, and supports departmental initiatives related to health services.
The School Nurse maintains accurate and confidential health records in compliance with state and federal laws, including FERPA and HIPAA, and prepares reports as required by the school administration or the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC). The nurse adheres to the professional code of ethics and standards outlined in the South Carolina Nurse Practice Act and the National Association of School Nurses (NASN) Scope and Standards of Practice. Additional duties may be assigned by the school administration.
Requirements:Qualifications
Candidates must hold a bachelor's degree in nursing and must possess an active South Carolina Board of Nursing Registered Nurse (RN) license; Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) may be considered depending on school policy but must work under appropriate supervision. CPR certification and current training in first aid and emergency procedures are required. A minimum of three years of nursing experience is preferred, with school nursing experience considered an asset. Candidates must be proficient in computer applications, electronic health record systems, and general office technology. Strong oral and written communication skills and the ability to work effectively with students, families, staff, and healthcare providers are essential. Completion of all required state and federal background checks and TB testing is required prior to employment.
