About the Position
The Director of Tax leads the company's enterprise-wide tax function for a large, multi-entity construction organization domiciled in the United States with operations and sales exclusively in the U.S. This role is responsible for ensuring compliance with all federal, state, and local tax requirements while optimizing the company's effective tax rate and cash tax position, in alignment with Company values, policies, procedures, and key objectives. The Director provides strategic leadership across income and franchise taxes, sales and use taxes, property taxes, payroll-related taxes, and construction industry-specific tax considerations including multi-state operations, project/job costing implications, and indirect tax exposure. This role partners closely with Finance, Legal, Treasury, HR/Payroll, Operations, and external advisors to manage tax risk, support business growth (organic and through M&A), and strengthen tax governance, processes and internal controls.

About the Position

This role partners closely with Finance, Legal, Treasury, HR/Payroll, Operations, and external advisors to manage tax risk, support business growth (organic and through M&A), and strengthen tax governance, processes and internal controls.
Day in the Life
- Develops and executes tax strategy in alignment with business objectives.
- Advises executive leadership on tax implications of business decisions, transactions, and regulatory developments.
- Identify planning opportunities to optimize the company's effective tax rate and cash tax position.
- Oversee preparation and review of federal and multi-state income and business tax filings, including extensions and supporting documentation.
- Manage complex areas such as apportionment, elections, and provision-to-return reconciliation processes.
- Ensure timely and accurate filings across all relevant jurisdictions.
- Lead the quarterly and annual income tax provision process under ASC 740.
- Oversee effective tax rate analysis, deferred taxes, uncertain tax positions, and financial statement disclosures.
- Manage federal and state estimated tax calculations and payments.
- Coordinate closely with external auditors to support financial statement reporting requirements.
- Direct sales and use tax compliance across multiple jurisdictions, including return preparation oversight and planning.
- Manage exemption documentation (e.g., resale, manufacturing, and project-specific construction exemptions).
- Conduct nexus evaluations and address potential exposure issues through remediation strategies.
- Oversee property tax filings, assessments, and appeals for company assets.
- Manage business license compliance and renewals across operating jurisdictions.
- Coordinate compliance with local taxes such as gross receipts or similar levies where applicable.
- Serve as the primary company contact for federal, state, and local taxing authorities.
- Lead audit management, including data gathering, response preparation, and negotiation of resolutions, protests, or appeals.
- Provides tax diligence, structuring, and integration support for acquisitions, dispositions, joint ventures, and other strategic initiatives.
- Partners with Legal and external advisors on entity structuring and post-transaction integration.
- Oversees intercompany transactions and transfer pricing documentation as applicable.
- Ensures alignment between operational activity, tax reporting, and financial reporting.
- Establishes and maintains tax policies, procedures, and compliance calendars.
- Strengthens internal controls and documentation supporting tax reporting and compliance.
- Partners with Accounting and IT to improve data quality, automation, and efficiency in tax processes.
- Identifies and supports tax credit and incentive opportunities, including federal and state research and development (R&D) tax credits.
- Collaborates with Operations, Engineering, and Finance to document qualifying activities and maintain audit-ready support.
- Evaluates additional incentives such as state development credits, energy-related incentives, and other applicable programs.
- Monitors and forecasts cash tax obligations in partnership with Treasury.
- Optimizes payment timing and leverages available credits and incentives.
- Oversees payroll tax compliance and filings in coordination with HR/Payroll and external providers.
- Ensures accurate handling of withholding, unemployment, and local payroll-related tax obligations.
- Supports resolution of payroll tax inquiries and audits.
- Leads, develops, and mentors tax team members.
- Manages workload planning, performance management, and departmental budgeting.
- Oversees relationships with external tax advisors and service providers.
- Partners with HR/Payroll, Legal, Treasury, Procurement, and Operations on tax-sensitive processes such as contract language, procurement taxability, exemption documentation, and data needed for credit studies and compliance.
- Monitor tax legislation and regulatory developments across jurisdictions.
- Assess potential impacts to the business and implements changes; communicates implications clearly to leadership.
- Consistently makes decisions in an attentive and safe manner to ensure the safety and health of self and others.
- Utilizes LEAN concepts or other continuous improvement methodologies to ensure the most efficient operations, processes, and activities.
- Promotes and models the Company mission, vision and values through exercising sound and ethical business practices, championing all elements of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) and providing high quality services and programs as they relate to clients, subcontractors, co-workers, suppliers, and the public.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field; MBA preferred.
- CPA required; JD or LLM in Taxation a plus.
- 10+ years of progressive tax experience with increasing leadership responsibility.
- Combination of public accounting and industry experience preferred.
- Deep expertise in U.S. federal and multi-state taxation, including nexus, apportionment, and compliance for multi-entity organizations.
- Demonstrated experience leading income tax provision processes under ASC 740.
- Experience managing indirect tax (sales and use tax) across multiple jurisdictions.
- Proven ability to lead teams and manage external advisors.
- Strong project management skills and ability to meet competing deadlines.
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to translate complex tax issues for non-tax stakeholders and executive leadership.
- High integrity, sound judgment, and ability to operate effectively in a fast-paced environment, deadline-driven environment.
- Experience in construction, engineering, industrial services, or other project-based industries.
- Experience with ERP systems and data analytics tools used to improve tax compliance and reporting processes.
- Experience supporting mergers and acquisitions, including diligence, structuring, and post-acquisition integration.
- Familiarity with tax credits and incentives common in capital-intensive or project-based industries.
- Experience supporting decentralized operations with multiple locations, equipment fleets, and project sites.
