About the RoleWe are currently seeking a dedicated Special Education Teacher to join our middle school team for the 202526 school year. This role is ideal for a student-centered educator who is passionate about inclusion, collaboration, and helping all learners thrive. The Special Education Teacher will provide a blend of direct instruction, co-teaching, and resource room support to ensure students receive the accommodations and specialized instruction outlined in their IEPs. This position requires a flexible educator who can work closely with general education teachers, support staff, and families to meet academic and social-emotional goals for students with diverse learning needs.
Responsibilities
  • Provide direct instruction and in-class support during daily ELA and Math blocks using co-teaching models and inclusion strategies
  • Deliver targeted small group instruction through a daily 45-minute Resource Room program
  • Ensure students receive the accommodations and supplemental aids outlined in their IEPs (e.g., graphic organizers, multiplication charts)
  • Co-plan and modify lessons with general education teachers to support access to grade-level curriculum and IEP goal attainment
  • Track student progress toward IEP goals using data from formal and informal assessments
  • Maintain organized trackers and documentation in alignment with IEP service mandates
  • Collaborate with co-teachers, grade teams, and the instructional support team to align supports across content areas
  • Implement behavior strategies and supports that promote student engagement and a positive classroom climate
  • Draft and maintain high-quality IEPs, including quarterly progress reports and IEP at a Glance summaries for teacher use
  • Communicate regularly with families to share academic and behavioral updates, ensuring all communication is documented and logged
  • Ensure testing accommodations are implemented with fidelity during all classroom and state assessments
  • Consult weekly with 8th grade teams and push in for services as needed
  • Stay in regular communication with the Coordinator of Special Education regarding student needs and compliance

Location and CommitmentsSchool day: 7:30 AM 4:00 PM, Monday FridaySchool year: Mid-August through the end of JuneThis role is based in-person in Mount Vernon, NY and may require occasional remote instructionQualifications
Masters degree (Required)New York State Teaching Certification (Required)Demonstrated successful experience working in an urban school settingDemonstrated ability to communicate and work effectively with staff and parents
