ALPINE ATHLETIC DEVELOPMENT MANAGER

CLASSIFICATION Year-round; Full-time

FLSA Exempt

REPORTS TO Director of Athletic Development

LOCATION Park City, UT

TRAVEL 20-80 days a year

SUMMARY / OBJECTIVE

The Alpine Athletic Development Manager is responsible for coordinating and delivering world leading Athletic Development to all of U.S. Ski & Snowboard’s Alpine National Ski Teams and working closely with the other key U.S. Ski & Snowboard staff to shape the philosophy and principles of athletic development across U.S. Ski & Snowboard Alpine Skiing. This position will collaborate with all disciplines of the High Performance department, working extensively with the Director of Athletic Development as well as the Director of Sport Science and Alpine Sport Coaches to implement purposeful and innovative athletic development programming that optimally physically prepares athletes to win medals on the international stage and help U.S. Ski & Snowboard achieve its Vision of “Best in the World” (most number of skiing and snowboarding medals at the Olympics Games).

ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES

The Alpine Athletic Development Manager will have responsibilities in the follow areas:

  1. Athlete Experience
    1. Lead and support athletic development coaching, education, testing, and support for U.S. Ski & Snowboard Teams; including, but not limited to:
      • Movement Skill competency assessment and development.
      • Strength and power development
      • Speed, agility, and change of direction practices
      • Athlete education
      • Testing, analysis, and evidence informed prescription
      • Sport science, innovation, and research
      • Will require off-season travel
    2. Develop and refine Alpine Sport Demand Analysis resources which shape the physical requirements needed to be successful in skiing on the world stage.
    3. Lead the design and monitoring of all aspects of the yearly periodized plans for athletic development and ensure that each athlete receives individualized training plans addressing their personal goals and weaknesses.
    4. Provide Sport Science support including (but not limited to); physiological monitoring of training sessions and camps, warm up/cool downs, research and implementing performance impacting technologies.
    5. Refine and conduct athletic development assessments (examples include movement analysis, aerobic/anaerobic fitness, force plate analysis) and provide meaningful feedback to athletes and coaches.
    6. Function as a key member of the Return to Sport Management Teams, supporting athletic reconditioning for injured athletes, overseeing reconditioning programming that address individual athlete needs and support safe return to full performance capacity.
  1. Operational Excellence
    1. Be the primary driver behind of world class, sport impacting athletic development programs at the Center of Excellence and as travel allows as teams train/compete around the world.
    2. Support, mentor and educate Alpine Athletic Development Coaches.
    3. Function as a key member of the High Performance Management Team integrating directly with the sport team personnel, appropriate department directors and athletics leadership.
    4. Work to distill and share relevant athletic development programing information to High Performance Centers and feeder clubs.
    5. Be a contributing member of the U.S. Ski & Snowboard High Performance Department by upholding and enhancing our culture.
    6. Collaborate with the Sport Education Department in the dissemination of educational content to support coach and athlete development initiatives.
    7. Assist with the High Performance Center program to support connection and information sharing between the NGB and HPCs, and the delivery of SkillsQuest-Fitness assessments.
    8. Present at conferences and workshops as required to share relevant information and build/maintain the reputation of U.S. Ski & Snowboard’s High Performance Department as a world lead in athletic development/applied sport science & medicine.
    9. Manages and oversees execution of U.S. Ski & Snowboard High Performance Internship program.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  2. Ability to visually monitor athletes.
  3. Sitting, standing, lifting and carrying (up to 50 pounds), reaching, squatting, climbing stairs, kneeling, and moving equipment/boxes up to 50 lbs.

COMPETENCIES & EXPERIENCE

  1. A minimum of undergraduate studies in a high performance related discipline, such as sport science, exercise physiology, strength and conditioning or kinesiology.
    • Ideally post-graduate studies in one of these areas
  2. Current certification from the CSCCa, NSCA, and/or USAW or international equivalents
  3. At least five years of applied athletic development experience with elite (Olympic/Professional level) athletic programs.
  4. Specialist knowledge in the area of athletic development as it pertains to the demands of skiing and snowboarding (ideally with specific knowledge of snowboarding and freeskiing)
  5. Experience of working as part of a highly qualified staff and working with multiple/complex teams
  6. Experience of working as part of a support team supporting medal/championship winning athletes/teams
  7. Excellent competence in physical testing and data analysis
  8. Significant experience presenting to both small and large groups
  9. Excellent interpersonal, time management, and communication skills and use these effectively within this environment.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Responsible for supervision of Alpine Athletic Development Coordinators.
