Position Summary:
The Class A Mechanic is responsible for performing advanced maintenance and repair on a variety of waste collection vehicles and equipment, including front loaders, rear loaders, roll-offs, and transfer station equipment. This role ensures all fleet vehicles operate safely, efficiently, and in compliance with DOT and environmental regulations. A successful candidate will demonstrate strong diagnostic skills, a commitment to safety, and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
Key Responsibilities:
Inspect, diagnose, and repair diesel and gasoline-powered refuse trucks and equipment.
Service hydraulic systems, air brakes, electrical systems, steering, suspensions, and drivetrain components.
Perform preventive maintenance, scheduled inspections, and DOT compliance checks.
Use diagnostic software and tools to troubleshoot fault codes and mechanical failures.
Conduct road tests to verify repairs and ensure vehicle performance and safety.
Maintain accurate service records and complete required documentation for compliance and audits.
Respond to road calls and emergency breakdowns as needed.
Ensure adherence to environmental and safety protocols, including proper disposal of fluids and hazardous materials.
Collaborate with drivers and operations staff to address recurring vehicle issues.
Mentor junior mechanics and assist with training and onboarding of new technicians.
Qualifications:
High school diploma or GED required; vocational or technical certification preferred.
Minimum 5 years of experience as a heavy-duty mechanic, preferably in waste management or municipal services.
Must possess a valid Class A or B CDL with air brake endorsement (or ability to obtain).
Strong knowledge of diesel engines, hydraulics, and computerized diagnostic tools.
Familiarity with refuse truck body systems such as Heil, McNeilus, Labrie, or New Way.
Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, schematics, and vehicle codes.
Capable of working outdoors in all weather conditions and lifting up to 50 lbs.
Preferred Skills and Certifications:
ASE Certifications (T-Series or H-Series preferred)
Welding and fabrication experience
Familiarity with fleet maintenance software (e.g., Techtool – Volvo - Cummins)
Knowledge of OSHA, DOT, and EPA regulations as they relate to vehicle maintenance and shop safety
Work Environment:
Work performed in shop and field environments, including transfer stations and landfills.
Exposure to loud noise, grease, odors, and potentially hazardous waste materials.
Use of PPE such as gloves, eye protection, and safety boots required.

REQUIREMENTS
Excellent data entry and organization skills are needed along with great communication skills. Proficient in MS Office and proven experience in log keeping. Ability to work well under pressure.
