About This Position

JOB SUMMARY

The Safety Officer is responsible for day-to-day activities related to safety, compliance, and training across all business units, including waste and recycling, pipeline, and concrete operations. This role assists with the design, planning, organization, and implementation of safety initiatives and training programs and the development of accident prevention strategies. The Safety Officer conducts accident and injury investigations, and participates in follow-up actions and corrective measures to mitigate future risk.

CORE RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Assist with the development, implementation, and monitoring of the corporate strategic safety plan.
  2. Coordinate elements of the corporate safety training and compliance program, including organizing mandatory safety meetings and tailoring content to each company or department, with a focus on Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) and Department of Transportation (DOT) compliance.
  3. Communicate and collaborate with internal departments, vendors, subcontractors, and third parties.
  4. Support management with the implementation and promotion of corporate safety initiatives.
  5. Conduct hazard assessments and help establish best practices in coordination with safety, training, and operations personnel.
  6. Promote and cultivate a strong safety culture across all business units.
  7. Perform and assist in the investigation and resolution of accidents and incidents, including claims processing and root cause analysis.
  8. Monitor and support proficiency training and certification programs for employees operating moving and heavy equipment.
  9. Assist in ensuring a safe, organized, and secure work environment, including facilities and equipment.
  10. Conduct routine in-house OSHA and Occupational Safety & Health Consultation (OSHCON) pre-audits to ensure regulatory compliance and readiness.
  11. Participate in and support regular safety observations at roads, landfills, and facilities.
  12. Perform other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS

  1. A minimum of four (4) years of safety-related experience (a degree may be substituted with relevant experience on a year-for-year basis, up to a maximum of four years);
  2. At least five (5) years of experience as a safety professional, including demonstrated work in loss control, incident prevention, safety training, and delivering presentations.
  3. Strong working knowledge of federal and state OSHA, DOT, and Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) regulations;
  4. Willingness and ability to travel to field or site locations as needed;
  5. Demonstrated ability to apply general safety rules and regulations to resolve specific workplace issues;
  6. Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English;
  7. Willingness to be on call and respond to safety-related incidents during evenings or weekends as necessary;
  8. Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook);
  9. Proven ability to work collaboratively as part of a team.

PREFERRED SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Current CSHO, CSS, CDS, ASP, CSP or equivalent or the ability to obtain within a reasonable period of time.
  2. Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.

REQUIRED LICENSES & CERTIFICATIONS

  1. Valid Class C driver’s license
  2. Safe driving record for the last three years.
