About This Position
Reporting directly to the Chief Executive Officer, the Chief Operating Officer (COO) of Beacon Health System is responsible for providing leadership and administrative direction to Beacon's acute care hospitals, service lines, retail division, supply chain, and facilities construction and real estate. The COO must ensure services are delivered in accordance with the standards established by the CEO and Board of Directors. Most importantly, the COO is responsible for overseeing the execution of financial, strategic and tactical programs, plans and services consistent with Beacon Health's Strategic Plan. This includes meeting or exceeding the strategic metrics for the health system, in partnership with the other Executive Team members. The COO represents Beacon to the community, professional societies, governmental and regulatory agencies, other health care providers, financial institutions, and other external contacts.

Directs the implementation of Beacon strategies, goals and objectives as established by the CEO and Board of Directors and the provision of quality, economical health care services by:
- Consulting with the executive staff in the planning and recommendation of all operational goals and objectives for entities under span of control.
- Building strategic alliances and partnerships within the organization to collaboratively execute business strategies and to identify best practices, efficiencies and opportunities for clinical standardization.
- Ensuring that Beacon policies are uniformly understood, consistently interpreted and administered through effective corporate channels of communication.
- Evaluating operational activities and driving the business towards enhanced product or service quality.
- Analyzing operating results attained on a regular basis, taking appropriate corrective action if necessary, and reporting results of activities.
- Interfacing with executives in the analysis of market trends in order to determine the viability of resources available to meet market demands.
- Overseeing the selection, employment, development, control and discharge of leaders who report directly to the COO.
- Establishing appropriate departmentalization and delegation and delineating human resources accountabilities.
- Effectively incorporating customer perspectives in all business activities.
Oversees Beacon�s physician relationships by:
- Interacting closely with the medical staff to ensure required standards of medical performance are achieved and maintained.
- Reviewing and approving contractual relationships with physicians.
- Negotiating sensitive contracts when necessary.
Works with executives in the development, implementation and monitoring of goals, forecasts, plans and budgets by:
- Ensuring the sound fiscal operation of the Health System including the timely, accurate and comprehensive development of an annual budget and its implementation; also, reviewing all capital equipment expenditures.
- Implementing and monitoring through executive staff members, effective communication and maintenance of corporate values.
- Ensuring Beacon is in compliance with all regulations impacting health care delivery and the rules of accrediting bodies by monitoring operations and initiating changes where required.
Develops and nurtures Beacon�s community relationships by:
- Representing the organization and its services positively to the public.
- Attending meetings of professional, civic and service organizations as an official representative of Beacon Health system.
- Encouraging and maintaining the integration of Beacon Health System with the community/public through effective communication and public relations programs.
Contributes to the overall effectiveness of Beacon Health System by:
- Researching, recommending and implementing new processes and technology to improve quality of services provided.
- Participating on Beacon Health Systems committees as requested.
- Completing other job-related assignments and special projects as directed.

- Maintains license/certification, registration in good standing throughout fiscal year.
- Direct patient care providers are required to maintain current BCLS (CPR) and other certifications as required by position/department.
- Consistently utilizes appropriate universal precautions, protective equipment, and ergonomic techniques to protect patient and self.
- Adheres to regulatory agency requirements, survey process and compliance.
- Complies with established organization and department policies.
- Available to work overtime in addition to working additional or other shifts and schedules when required.

Education, Experience, Knowledge & Skills:
- Master's Degree (MHA/MBA/MS) in Health Care Administration, Business Administration or related area required. Minimum of ten years of progressive leadership experience, as a CEO, COO or senior leader within a healthcare system. Strong preference for senior leadership experience within an independent health care system.
