Lab Manager - Ambulatory Operations

SUMMARY

The Laboratory Manager’s role is to coordinate, plan, and operationally integrate services between and within departments. The primary focus of this position will be managerial oversight of ambulatory laboratory site locations to include the North Campus, Piedmont, Central/Clemson, and Outpatient Phlebotomy.

RESPONSIBILITIES

· Working with others, oversees daily operations, including a) Evaluating problems and making changes as needed to improve continuously the quality of laboratory testing, b) Handling complaints and/or problems in order to make them opportunities for improvement, c) implementing changes and ideas to systematically improve the delivery of laboratory service.

· Maintains adequate and efficient staffing levels for assigned areas and displays an ongoing commitment of recruitment and retention of personnel and provide ongoing coaching/mentoring/counseling as required or needed.

· Works with the EPIC team to maintain computer functionality as it pertains to the needs for the clinical testing and reporting areas.

· Coordinates, prepares and reviews the departmental budgets and financial reports. Plans appropriately for capital purchases and provide justifications for those projects. Reviews financial reports monthly and explains variances accordingly and takes appropriate corrective actions as needed.

· Establish and/or reviews department policies, communicate these to department staff members and ensure implementation

Establish monitors and maintains inventory control systems to ensure constant and adequate stock of lab supplies for uninterrupted services with minimal emergency orders.

· Assists in the development of long range and short-term goals for the laboratory.

· Works with the other managers to evaluate equipment needs and requests appropriate equipment as needed.

· Works with the medical directors and other lab administrators to establish operational performance measurements and monitor trends in key performance indicators to enhance laboratory services.

· Consistently completes all assignments in a timely manner, thoroughly and appropriately detailed.

· Promotes intra and inter departmental cooperation.

· Takes an active role in maintaining positive medical staff relations.

· Demonstrates good leadership by developing standards of performance, determining areas of responsibility and delegating authority to appropriate staff members.

· Ensures technical supervisors and coordinators demonstrate competency for areas of responsibility.

· Works with coordinators and other lab managers to ensure that staff members are trained and demonstrate competency in areas of responsibility

Ensures compliance with all regulatory agencies and adherence to safety and infection control standards. Maintains the CAP database for appointed sites ensuring the activity menus and staff rosters are up to date.

· Demonstrates commitment to an ongoing Laboratory Quality System to enhance patient care and customer relations.

· Reviews and maintains oversight for proficiency testing in applicable areas.

· Assures compliance with all applicable regulatory agencies (CAP, JCAHO, AABB, SC DHEC and FDA).

· Demonstrates a commitment to managerial development through seminars, workshops and professional affiliations as appropriate.

· As an Active member of the management team, participates in Quality Improvement teams, task forces, committees, case management teams and other hospital related programs as requested by the laboratory administrative director.

QUALIFICATIONS

· Bachelor’s Degree in Medical Technology, Medical Laboratory Science, Clinical Laboratory Science, Chemistry, Biology or related science to meet the CLIA qualifications for High Complexity testing. Registered by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) or other recognized agency with a minimum of 4 years’ experience.

· Master’s degree in Healthcare Science or Business Administration recommended.

· Supervisory experience required.
