About This Position

Environmental ScientistOxford, MD, USA | Full-Time (40)

CSS seeks to hire an Environmental Scientist to support NCCOS field and lab research as well as vessels at the Oxford, MD facility. The successful candidate will serve as the field program lead for logistics and planning, primary deckhand for the COL 55-foot research vessel "Chesapeake", member of the COL dive team, and general program support for vessels and laboratory research.

Qualified candidates should be able to:

  • Assist in the planning and conduct of scientific surveys and experiments in field and laboratory settings;
  • Plan and coordinate logistics of field operations;
  • Serve as primary deckhand for the RV5502 (NOAA 55ft research vessel), and vessel operator for small boat (> 25 ft) fleet;
  • Assist Captain and Vessel Operations Coordinator with vessel maintenance, and contract preparation, procurement, and related tasks as needed;
  • Maintain small boat fleet in accordance with NOAA Small Boat Program policy and COL guidelines;
  • Maintain experimental tanks and systems;
  • Enter data and assist in report and publication preparation;
  • Obtain certification as a NOAA diver, and serve on NCCOS Dive Team;
  • Maintain water quality monitoring station and associated telemetry and datalogger equipment;

To be considered for employment, applicants should have:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent technical level knowledge of the theories, principles, and methods of a technical professional field, with additional skills and abilities acquired through high academic achievement or at least one year of professional experience in the field.
  • A background in coastal or marine biology with experience working in multiple ecosystem types.
  • Familiar with different field sampling, processing, and laboratory techniques.
  • Experience working on and operating small vessels including trailering;
  • Willingness to work in adverse conditions including inclement weather and cold low visibility diving;
  • Willingness to learn basic programming languages for the operation of water quality equipment and data processing;
  • Recreational diving certification: scientific diving preferred;
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds;
  • Experience with routine software such as Excel, Word, ARC GIS etc..
  • Ability to work well with others in team settings
