Position Type: Hourly / Non-Exempt, 10-Month Position
Position Summary
The Paraprofessional provides instructional and non-instructional support to teachers, administrators, and students in the classroom and school environment. Working under the direct supervision of a certified teacher and/or school administrator, the Paraprofessional assists in the delivery of instruction, classroom management, and student supervision. This position plays a key role in promoting a positive, safe, and inclusive learning environment that supports student achievement and the mission of River City Science Academy.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Instructional Support
- Assist teachers in planning, organizing, and implementing instructional activities for individuals, small groups, or the entire class.
- Reinforce lessons and provide accommodations, interventions, and individualized assistance under teacher direction.
- Support classroom instruction through the preparation and organization of learning materials, bulletin boards, and instructional resources.
- Administer diagnostic or prescriptive testing and assist with progress monitoring as directed by instructional staff.
- Assist with technology-based instruction, classroom media, and other educational equipment to enhance learning.
- Provide academic and behavioral support to students, including those with Exceptional Student Education (ESE) and English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) needs.
Student Supervision and Behavior Management
- Supervise students during instructional and non-instructional times, including arrival, dismissal, transitions, lunch, recess, and hallways.
- Support implementation of classroom and schoolwide behavior management plans by reinforcing positive behaviors and assisting in conflict resolution or crisis intervention.
- Maintain a safe and orderly environment that promotes student engagement and respect for school expectations.
- Assist with monitoring and supporting students during drills, assemblies, or school events as assigned.
Clerical and Operational Support
- Assist in maintaining accurate attendance, student records, and classroom reports.
- Prepare instructional, clerical, and visual materials as requested by the teacher or administration.
- Support general school operations by assisting in coverage for classrooms, cafeteria, hallways, or arrival/dismissal duties as needed.
- Serve as a substitute teacher in the absence of the regular classroom teacher, as assigned by the principal or designee.
- Participate in professional development, job-related training, and medical or safety training as required by Florida Statutes.
Additional Duties
- Maintain confidentiality regarding student records and sensitive information in compliance with FERPA and school policy.
- Exhibit professionalism, reliability, and ethical behavior in all interactions with students, staff, and families.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the supervising teacher, principal, or designee
Minimum Qualifications
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- Successful completion of Level II background screening as required by Florida law.
- Ability to follow teacher direction and school procedures while supporting student instruction and supervision.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Education, Early Childhood Development, or a related field.
- Prior experience working in K–12 educational settings.
- Additional certifications in ESE, ESOL, or reading/math interventions.
- Knowledge of classroom behavior management, student supervision, and instructional support strategies.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of child development, instructional practices, and learning accommodations.
- Ability to communicate effectively and positively with students, staff, and families.
- Ability to work collaboratively with teachers, administrators, and support staff in a teamoriented environment.
- Strong organizational and time management skills with attention to detail.
- Proficiency with computers, classroom technology, and educational software.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound judgment.
Working Conditions / Physical Requirements
Work is performed primarily in a classroom, office, or school setting with frequent outdoor supervision.
Requires regular standing, walking, bending, and lifting up to 20 pounds. Must be able to supervise groups of students and respond promptly to emergencies. Must be able to perform essential job functions with or without reasonable accommodation.
Reporting Relationships
Reports to: Assigned classroom teacher(s), Principal, or designated administrator. Works closely with teachers, administrators, ESE specialists, and student services staff.
Terms of Employment
10-Month Position, aligned with the school calendar. Hourly rate and benefits consistent with the school’s compensation plan. Performance will be evaluated in accordance with River City Science Academy policies
