About This Position

POSITION PURPOSE

  • Assist the pharmacists in the performance of technical functions and supports professional functions in the provision of pharmaceutical services to patients, staff, and physicians, with a focus on sterile compounding. The Technician works under the supervision of the Pharmacist-on-duty.

MINIMUM EDUCATION REQUIRED

    High School or Equivalent (GED)

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

    Pharmacy Technician experience required; hospital pharmacy experience including sterile compounding strongly preferred.

LICENSES / CERTIFICATIONS REQUIRED

    Wisconsin pharmacy technician license is required. PTCB certification as a pharmacy technician within six months of hire is required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES REQUIRED

    Must have knowledge of pharmacy. Must exhibit a working knowledge of drug names, doses, strengths, and formulations. Must successfully complete Pharmacy Technician competency programs through on-the-job exposure. Must be knowledgeable of and maintain compliance with sterile products standards.

PRINCIPLE ACCOUNTABILITIES AND ESSENTIAL DUTIES

    Prepares Parenteral products: IV, IVPB’s, and TPN solutions according to policies and procedures, and organizational compliance with USP 797, USP 800, and USP 795 through completion of ongoing competencies and compounding documentation. Is able to perform and all clean room pharmacy technician tasks in both the non-hazardous and the hazardous clean rooms and routinely has staffing assignments in the clean rooms. Oversight of the sterile products personnel training program includes ensuring that the program describes the required training and frequency and how competency will be assessed. It also entails the actual training of compounding personnel or overseeing the training performed by an assigned trainer. The program must equip personnel with the knowledge and skills needed to perform their assigned compounding tasks and must be documented. Maintains quality assurance and control programs for sterile products, which include but are not limited to USP 797 and USP 800 compliance. Must establish a system of adherence to procedures, address other quality problems, evaluate complaints and adverse events, and appropriate investigations and corrective actions. Designated person(s) must review and document the review of the program at least every 12 months. Performs other pharmacy technician duties, not related to sterile compounding, as per department need, including, but not limited to processing medication orders, stocking medication dispensing cabinets, processing ambulance trays and code cart trays, answering telephone calls, and returning medication to appropriate storage areas.
