Geographic Information System (GIS) Intern at Lake County – Libertyville, Illinois

Lake County Public Works is seeking a GIS summer intern to work from May through August. Becoming a GIS intern with the Lake County Public Works will allow you to perform beginning technical GIS work in a training capacity, completing tasks such as collecting GPS data and cataloging the data in Lake County’s GIS mapping application.

• Collect GPS data on public owned assets, including sanitary sewer manhole locations, drinking water valves, and fire hydrants.
• Catalogue and reference the data into Lake County’s live GIS mapping application.
• Supervision and training are received from a higher-level GIS Analyst.

• Must have knowledge of geography as applied to concepts and principles of GIS and map projections.
• Experience with the ArcGIS geographic information system (GIS) software is also required.
• Must have a basic understanding of GIS programming and customization techniques.
• Must have the ability to and willingness to learn technical GIS tasks and procedures.
• Must have the ability to use GIS equipment, instruments and devices.

Education and/or Other Requirements:

• Must have completed college level course work in GIS.
• Must have the ability to work both individually and in a team atmosphere.
• Possession of a valid driver’s license, supplemented by a satisfactory driving record.
• Experience with the ArcGIS software is required.

Physical Requirements:

• You can expect to spend approximately 80% of your time in the field in all weather conditions.

• This role is 40 hours a week Monday through Friday.
• Your start and end time will be determined by your Supervisor.
• The internship will run from mid-May through mid-August.
