About This Position

DEFINITION

Under supervision on an assigned shift to participate in life safety activities in protecting life and property; respond to emergencies and administer basic and advanced life support to sick or injured persons within the scope of Paramedic licensure and accreditation; operate and maintain ambulances and medical equipment; station maintenance and training activities in support of overall Department objectives and performs related responsibilities as required


EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Incumbents perform the full range of Paramedic duties under general supervision. Duties are performed under emergency conditions include:

  • Perform daily maintenance projects under the supervision and direction of the on-duty Company Officer.
  • Respond to medical-aid alarms, ambulance and public service calls for service.
  • Perform rescue operations and assist in emergency care of sick and injured persons, provide appropriate basic and/or advanced life support treatment as per local, state and federal protocols.
  • Participate in a variety of job-related drills and training activities.
  • Maintain and submit records and patient care reports and others as required.
  • Responsible for the proper use of all facilities and equipment used or issued by Department.
  • Assure compliance of all policies, procedures, processes and protocols of the Sanger Fire Department Employee Handbook, Standard Operating Procedures, Sanger Municipal Code, City rules and regulations and Central California EMS Agency Policies and Procedures.
  • Inspect, clean and service firefighting and medical equipment and vehicles, conduct fire hydrant maintenance and flow tests under the supervision of a suppression member or on-duty Company Officer; maintain clean and orderly conditions in and around fire station.
  • Assist in the inspection of public and commercial buildings for fire prevention purposes; identify code and ordinance violations and potential firefighting problems; report violations to the occupancy owner under the supervision of a suppression member or on-duty Company Officer.
  • Participate in other Department programs and projects such as community education.
  • When available and necessary, may be required to respond to emergency calls during off-duty hours.
  • Other related duties as required.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS


Knowledge of:

  • Geography of the local area.
  • Appropriate methods of patient care utilized within the Paramedic scope of practice.
  • Federal, state and governmental agency laws and regulations pertaining to emergency medical services.

Ability to:

  • Treat all co-responders, patients, patient's families and the public with respect and professionalism.
  • Learn city streets and addresses.
  • Maintain a professional appearance and attitude at all times when representing the Sanger Fire Department.
  • Follow all safety rules and guidelines.
  • Maintain all necessary certifications and licenses.
  • Understand and act in accordance with department policies, rules, regulations and written and oral instructions.
  • Arrive at all work assignments on time with all appropriate certifications and credentials.
  • Drive an ambulance safely and skillfully in accordance with traffic laws and ordinances.
  • Meet and maintain standards of adequate physical endurance and agility.
  • Think and act quickly in emergency situations.

EDUCATION


Equivalent to a G.E.D. or a high school diploma.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Possession and maintenance of a valid California Class "C" license with Ambulance Driver Certificate issued by the California Department of Motor Vehicles.
  • Possession and maintenance of a responsible driving record.
  • Possession and maintenance of a Central California EMS Agency EMT-P Accreditation.
  • Possession and maintenance of a valid BLS Healthcare Provider card.
  • Possession and maintenance of a valid ACLS and PALS Certification.
  • Current Medical Examiner's Card.


PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS & WORKING CONDITIONS

Mobility to kneel and bend; strength to lift patients with assistance; and work under stressful and emergency situations. Work variable hours or 48-hour shifts, weekdays, weekends and/or holidays on an as needed basis; work in heat, cold, dampness, fog; maintain a clean, neat appearance and wear a uniform.
