Responsibilities
Under the direction of the Supervising Physician or Designated Agent, provides medical and surgical services to patients of the assigned clinic. Ability to make responsible decisions within the scope of practice as a dependent medical practitioner.
Qualifications
Education: As required by state.
- Committee on Allied Health, Education Accreditation of the American Medical Association (CAHEA).
- Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP).
- Accreditation Review Commission on the Education of the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA).
Experience:
Requires experience in direct patient management, in the surgical subspecialty of vascular, neurosurgery or orthopedic surgery (depending on assignment). Surgical assisting experience required. Knowledge of acute and chronic disease states, administration, and prescription of medications, and delivering physical care following treatment plan.

Responsibilities
Inpatient Care
- Provides medical services under the direction of a physician to patients presenting specialty conditions or disease (depending on assigned department), consistent with the PA’s current Practice Description approved by the State of Oregon Board of Medical Examiners.
- Rounds on service patients: assesses patients, performs physical exams, writes orders, documents daily notes.
- Orders and interprets laboratory tests and radiological examinations. Reports clinical data at rounds or when appropriate.
- Recognizes and evaluates patients who require the immediate medical or surgical attention and, when necessary, initiates, without supervision, emergency medical treatments.
- Assists in surgical procedures in emergency, clinic and the operating room.
- Performs minor surgical, diagnostic, and therapeutic procedures, administers treatments and medications consistent with the PA’s current Practice Description approved by the State of Oregon Board of Medical Examiners.
- Maintains and signs medical records pertaining to treatments and examinations administered.
- Participates in local, regional, & national continuing medical education programs and clinical meetings to maintain medical knowledge as well as a professional network.
Outpatient Care
- Participates in Medical Specialty Outpatient Clinic.
- Co-ordinates discharge planning and follow-up.
- Arranges all sub-specialty follow-up.
- Communicates with PCPs.
- Performs dictation of history/physical, clinical notes, imaging studies and discharge summary.
- Oversees medications for outpatient care.
- Arranges appropriate outpatient therapy, referral system within Legacy to be maximally utilized.
- Manages outpatient phone contacts.
- Medication requests.
- Disability and work release.
- Consultant evaluations.
- Evaluates patients in the specialty outpatient clinic.
- Assures essential studies are performed prior to clinic visit.
- Examines and interviews patient and family.
- Presents case with recommendations to supervising physicians, as necessary.
- Coordinates and acts as liaison for subspecialty care and consultations.
- Documents and bills for services promptly with appropriate diagnostic and procedure codes.
- Completes medical records and appropriate charge/coding data forms to facilitate hospital billing for service rendered.
