About This Position
Overall goal:
We are seeking a Technical Sales Manager who can bridge engineering and commercial conversations with OEM and industrial customers. This role will focus on growing our custom low voltage cable assembly and electrical kitting business beyond wind—particularly into solar/BESS, data centers, EV/industrial electrification, and automation.
You will own the full sales cycle: from prospecting and technical discovery through quoting, prototype support, and long term agreements. You should be equally comfortable on the factory floor reviewing drawings as you are in commercial negotiation.
Duties and Responsibilities
• Identify, qualify, and close new business for custom cable assemblies and electro mechanical kits in target markets (solar/BESS, data centers, EV charging, industrial automation, etc.).
• Work directly with engineering teams at prospects to review schematics, cable schedules, and BOMs, and translate these into manufacturable, cost effective solutions with our internal engineering and operations.
• Develop strong account plans for strategic customers, including revenue targets, share of wallet objectives, and expansion roadmaps.
• Lead technical and commercial proposals: RFQs, pricing models, value engineering options, and stocking/JIT or kanban programs.
• Coordinate prototypes, pilot orders, and design iterations with Sphere’s Colorado plants and Mexico facility; ensure customers experience rapid, reliable responses.
• Represent Sphere at customer sites, industry events, and trade shows, articulating our capabilities in cables, assemblies, kitting, and transport equipment.
• Collect and communicate voice of customer feedback into product/process improvements and new service offerings.
• Maintain accurate pipeline, forecast, and account information in CRM; report regularly on progress vs. targets.
Required Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or closely related technical field; OR equivalent technical experience in cable assemblies/wire harness industry.
• 5+ years of experience in technical B2B sales or applications engineering for:
• Custom cable assemblies, wire harnesses, or
• Electrical/electro mechanical systems (e.g., power distribution, industrial automation, energy systems, or similar).
• Strong understanding of low voltage and control cabling (conductor sizes, insulation types, terminations, basic ampacity and derating concepts).
• Proven track record of growing accounts, penetrating new markets, and managing complex, multi stakeholder sales cycles.
• Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and mechanical drawings.
• Comfortable traveling 30–50% of the time to visit customers, sites, and trade events.
Preferred Experience
• Background selling into at least one of: utility scale solar/BESS, data centers, EV charging, industrial automation, aerospace/defense, medical devices, or heavy equipment.
• Experience with standards such as IPC/WHMA A 620, ISO 9001 environments, or similar quality critical industries.
• Experience working with OEMs on NPI (new product introduction), prototypes, and design for manufacture/value engineering.
• Familiarity with JIT, kanban, or vendor managed inventory programs.
• Technically credible with engineers; commercially savvy with purchasing and executives.
• Hands on, problem solving mindset; comfortable in factories, warehouses, and field environments.
• Strong communication skills and the ability to “translate” engineering details into business value.
• Self starter who can build a territory and book of business with limited legacy accounts.
Environmental, Health & Safety
• Wear required Personal Protective Equipment [PPE]
• Participate in company sponsored safety training
• Follow safe work practices
• Report unsafe/hazardous conditions
