Overview

A Laborer is responsible for performing physical labor at jobsites assigned by cleaning and prepping and assisting other trades.

Primary Responsibilities

• Performs work on road construction projects
• Lifts, carries, pushes and pulls materials (sand, gravel, asphalt and concrete, etc.) from the truck box, placesand/or compacts the materials on the roadways, ditches or pipes under the roadway
• Repairs highways and streets and drainage systems at frequent intervals to ensure that all aspects of the systemsare functioning properly
• Responds to complaints regarding road conditions; evaluates situation; explains findings to supervisor and/ormakes the necessary repairs
• Performs daily routine inspections and preventive maintenance on all assigned equipment and refers defects orneeded repairs to supervisor timely; cleans vehicle inside and out and performs maintenance on equipment fordaily operations
• Operates a variety of power construction and maintenance equipment used in the road commission operations
• Installs warning signs on highways and motorists away from a maintenance site
• Repairs broken roads and patch potholes to ward off accidents or inconveniences
• Performs repair work on detached or broken guardrails
• Clears debris and snow off highways to ensure motor safety
• Lays asphalt and mix, pour and smooth out cement to even out potholes or ditches
• Removes bushes and trees from roads by using specialized equipment and techniques
• Repairs road shoulders and erect highway markers and warning signs
• Loading and unloading shipments
• Performs other duties as assigned

Qualifications

• Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions
• Ability to perform heavy physical labor exposed to weather elements, noise, dust and temperature extremes(hot/cold)
• Ability to independently lift 50 – 75lb
• Ability to operate computer and/or other related equipment
• Ability to follow safe work practices and wear all required personal protection equipment for the task (safetyglasses/shield, hardhat, safety boots and gloves)
• Must demonstrate the ability to integrate work across relevant areas, develop the business and services toenhance customer satisfaction and productivity, manage risks appropriately, manage information, and provideexceptional service to internal and external customers.
• Must demonstrate effective decision making, results delivery, team building, and the ability to stay current withrelevant technology and innovation
• Ability to apply common sense to carry out instructions and deal with challenges/issues
• Must demonstrate strong ethics, interpersonal skills, and the ability to effectively manage stress and engage incontinuous learning.
• Proven ability to follow precise directions and procedures
• Proven ability to adapt to an ever-changing schedules
• Ability to absorb and retain formalized training
• Ability to work overtime if necessary.
• Ability to travel and stay overnight to perform work at other branches

Education and/or Experience

• High School Diploma or equivalent
• 2+ years of experience
• Must have a good driving record
• Must possess a valid California Driver’s License
