Senior Java Developer

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Senior Java Developer based in United States.

This role supports the sustainment, enhancement, and modernization of mission-critical applications serving the Department of Veterans Affairs.
You’ll work across established enterprise Java platforms while helping transition capabilities toward modern application architectures.
The position combines hands-on development with opportunities to modernize monolithic systems through microservices and API-driven designs.
You’ll contribute to applications built with both legacy enterprise technologies and modern Java and Spring Boot frameworks.
The role involves solving complex production issues, improving application performance, and delivering reliable software in an Agile environment.
You’ll collaborate with architects and senior engineers while contributing to code reviews, automated testing, CI/CD, and deployments.
This is a fully remote U.S. opportunity for an experienced developer interested in meaningful government technology modernization.

Accountabilities:
  • Design, develop, test, deploy, and maintain enterprise Java applications.
  • Support the sustainment, enhancement, and modernization of mission-critical applications.
  • Analyze, troubleshoot, and resolve complex software defects and production issues.
  • Maintain and enhance applications using Java, Spring Framework, Struts, JSP, EJB, JMS, WebLogic, Hibernate, Oracle, and related technologies.
  • Develop modern backend services using Java 17+, Spring Boot, microservices, JPA/Hibernate, REST APIs, Maven, and Swagger/OpenAPI.
  • Design and implement REST and SOAP-based services and system integrations.
  • Decompose monolithic applications into appropriately designed microservices.
  • Apply microservices transaction orchestration patterns where appropriate.
  • Collaborate with architects and senior developers on application modernization initiatives.
  • Design scalable API-driven architectures that bridge legacy platforms with future-state solutions.
  • Develop and optimize SQL queries and database integrations.
  • Investigate application performance and reliability issues and implement appropriate improvements.
  • Participate in code reviews to maintain quality, security, and engineering standards.
  • Mentor junior developers and provide technical guidance when needed.
  • Contribute to automated testing strategies and implementation.
  • Support CI/CD processes, application deployments, and release activities.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional Agile/Scrum teams to plan and deliver software enhancements.
  • Contribute to technical documentation and maintainable development practices.
  • Support enterprise applications throughout their development and operational lifecycles.
Requirements:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Systems, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
  • 8+ years of professional software development experience.
  • Strong hands-on experience developing applications with Java 17 or later.
  • Strong experience with the Spring Framework and/or Spring Boot.
  • Experience designing and developing REST APIs and web services.
  • Strong experience with microservices architectures.
  • Strong experience with JPA/Hibernate and Maven.
  • Experience with Swagger/OpenAPI and API documentation.
  • Experience working with Oracle or other relational database technologies.
  • Strong SQL development and database integration skills.
  • Experience using Git-based source control.
  • Experience working within Agile/Scrum development environments.
  • Strong troubleshooting, analytical, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with architects, developers, and cross-functional stakeholders.
  • Ability to work independently while contributing effectively to distributed development teams.
  • Experience with WebLogic application server administration or deployment is preferred.
  • Experience with Struts, JSP, EJB, JMS, or other enterprise Java technologies is preferred.
  • Experience with IBM ILOG JRules / Operational Decision Manager (ODM) is a plus.
  • Experience with microservices transaction orchestration is a plus.
  • Experience with Docker and containerized applications is preferred.
  • Experience with React, JavaScript, or TypeScript is advantageous.
  • Experience supporting federal government or Department of Veterans Affairs programs is preferred.
  • Experience with Jira and Confluence is a plus.
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident.
  • Must be authorized to work in the United States on an ongoing basis without employment sponsorship.
  • Must have reliable internet service suitable for effective remote work.
Benefits:
  • Fully remote position within the United States.
  • Base salary of $130,000–$150,000 annually, depending on geographic location, experience, skills, education, internal equity, security clearance, and contract requirements.
