Job Description
This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Structured Cabling Design Engineer based in Netherlands.
This is an opportunity to design and deliver critical physical network infrastructure supporting large-scale AI and data center environments.
You will develop structured cabling solutions that connect compute, storage, networking, security, and building systems across complex facilities.
The role spans the full project lifecycle, from initial concepts and detailed design through construction, commissioning, and deployment.
You will work across fiber and copper infrastructure, creating scalable solutions designed for reliability, maintainability, and future capacity growth.
Close collaboration with network engineering, construction, operations, vendors, and multidisciplinary design teams will be central to your work.
As a remote engineer, you will combine technical ownership with occasional site surveys and field inspections when required.
This is a strong opportunity to contribute to high-impact infrastructure projects within a fast-moving, international, engineering-led environment.
- Develop end-to-end structured cabling designs for new-build, expansion, retrofit, and capacity-add data center projects.
- Design fiber-optic and copper cabling infrastructure supporting networking, compute, storage, management, security, and building systems.
- Develop connectivity designs for MDFs, IDFs, MMRs, network rooms, meet-me rooms, and data halls.
- Create fiber backbone, horizontal cabling, interconnect, cross-connect, and equipment connectivity architectures.
- Produce single-line diagrams, cabling schematics, rack elevations, patching diagrams, pathway layouts, fiber routing plans, and connectivity schedules.
- Determine appropriate fiber counts, cable and connector types, patch-panel requirements, termination methods, and pathway capacity.
- Design single-mode and multimode fiber solutions, including high-density and MPO/MTP-based connectivity where appropriate.
- Specify Category 6/6A copper cabling and associated patching infrastructure.
- Calculate capacity requirements for cable trays, conduits, ladder racks, pathways, and containment systems.
- Coordinate cabling designs with network, electrical, mechanical, architectural, security, and construction disciplines.
- Review construction drawings, BIM/CAD models, technical specifications, vendor submittals, RFIs, and supplier proposals.
- Prepare Bills of Materials (BOMs) and support material forecasting and procurement activities.
- Establish and maintain cabling standards, design guidelines, naming conventions, labeling requirements, and installation specifications.
- Ensure designs comply with applicable TIA, BICSI, IEEE, NEC/NFPA, ISO/IEC, and manufacturer standards.
- Support capacity planning by assessing future fiber, copper, rack, and pathway requirements.
- Review contractor installation packages and verify that field implementation aligns with approved designs.
- Support testing, certification, commissioning, punch-list resolution, and project closeout activities, including reviewing OTDR and insertion-loss results where applicable.
- Participate in remote design reviews, construction coordination meetings, and technical troubleshooting.
- Conduct occasional site surveys and field inspections when required.
- Identify design risks, constructability challenges, capacity constraints, and opportunities for standardization.
- Maintain accurate as-built documentation, cable schedules, port assignments, rack elevations, and connectivity records.
- Manage multiple concurrent data center projects while maintaining high standards of quality and meeting schedule commitments.
- 5+ years of experience in structured cabling, telecommunications, physical network infrastructure, data center infrastructure, or a closely related field.
- Strong hands-on design experience within mission-critical or data center environments.
- Demonstrated expertise in fiber-optic infrastructure, including both single-mode and multimode fiber.
- Solid understanding of structured cabling architecture, high-density connectivity, patching systems, pathways, and physical network infrastructure.
- Experience developing technical drawings, cabling schematics, rack elevations, connectivity schedules, and related design documentation.
- Knowledge of relevant industry standards and practices, including TIA, BICSI, IEEE, NEC/NFPA, ISO/IEC, and manufacturer requirements.
- Ability to coordinate effectively with multidisciplinary engineering, construction, operations, network, and vendor teams.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, particularly when assessing capacity, constructability, reliability, and future-growth requirements.
- High attention to detail and commitment to maintaining accurate technical documentation and as-built records.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities independently in a remote working environment.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the confidence to participate in technical reviews and resolve design or implementation issues.
- Willingness to conduct occasional site surveys and field inspections as project requirements dictate.
- Competitive compensation.
- Career growth and continuous learning opportunities.
- Flexible working environment with a high degree of ownership and autonomy.
- Opportunity to work on impactful, large-scale AI and data center infrastructure projects.
- Collaborative and innovative engineering culture.
- International environment with talented, multidisciplinary teams.
- Opportunity to contribute to technically challenging projects shaping the infrastructure behind the AI economy.
- Fast-paced environment offering meaningful responsibility and the opportunity to influence infrastructure standards and solutions.
- Commitment to an inclusive workplace and equal employment opportunities.
- Support for reasonable accommodations during the application process.
