Christ the King Jesuit College Prep - Corporate Work Study Overview

Christ the King Jesuit College Prep, through the Cristo Rey Network model, prepares young men and women from Chicago’s West Side to be leaders and agents of change through the integration of college-preparatory study, work experience, extracurricular activities, and service. Through participation in the Corporate Work Study Program (CWSP), our students earn up to 60% of their education costs and they develop the skills and gain the experiences necessary for college and career success.

Bus Chaperone Position Overview

The CWSP Bus Chaperone is a CTK employee who works collaboratively with a third-party bus driver to ensure students are safely transported to and from their Corporate Work Study jobs each day.

This is a part-time seasonal position that is active from the end of August to the end of May each year. The position is scheduled Monday – Thursday with two shifts each day. Shift times are approximate, as they may vary based on the number of students present each day and traffic conditions. The first shift is from approximately 7:45am to approximately 10:00am and the second shift is from approximately 3:00pm to approximately 5:45pm. Compensation for the position is $19.25 per hour.

Primary Responsibilities:

Route Management

• Work with CWSP staff to obtain an accurate and complete list of all students assigned to a route who are present each morning. Ensure that all students who are in attendance are on the bus and accounted for before the bus leaves CTK.

• Assist the driver in navigating to each drop-off location and ensure that the correct students exit the bus at each drop off location.

• Assist the driver in navigating to each pick-up location for the afternoon/evening route and ensure every student who is assigned to that stop and is in attendance each day boards the bus. Work with the CWSP team to locate students who are not present and ensure they board the bus before the bus proceeds to its next stop.

• Ride the bus back to CTK with the students and check in with the CWSP team at the end of each day.

• Follow the assigned route sheet, deviating only with explicit permission from a CWSP leadership team member.

• Always be in full charge of the bus and address student behavior concerns as needed

Student Safety

• Ensure students safely enter and exit the school bus at their designated stops.

• Ensure all passengers are safely seated at all times while the bus is in motion.

• Maintain order on the bus, explain safety procedures to students as needed, enforce rules of conduct and respond to emergencies, including the safe evacuation of passengers through emergency exits.

Bus Upkeep

• Ensure a welcoming, orderly, appropriate, and professional bus environment

• Ensure the bus is free of garbage at the end of each route

• Bring any student items left on the bus to the CWSP office at the end of every route.

Reporting

• Prepare and submit required reports and completed trip logs daily.

• Report all issues of student behavior and policy violations at the end of every shift.

• Report any concerns related to the condition of the bus or the bus driver to CWSP leadership promptly

Additional Responsibilities

• Exercise good judgment in the performance of job responsibilities and work without direct supervision.

• Engage positively with students while maintaining appropriate boundaries

• Communicate effectively with students, the bus driver, and CWSP staff.

• Comply with rules set in school, federal, state and local policies and regulations.

• Other duties as assigned by Supervisor.

Requirements:

Qualifications:

• Possess a high school diploma or the equivalent.

• Have excellent integrity and demonstrate good moral character and initiative.

• Interpersonal skills to effectively communicate with students, staff, administration, parents, business partners, and the community

• Be reliable and dependable, attending work each day and being on time for each shift.

• Work effectively as part of a team and efficiently as an individual

• Be flexible and adaptable as CWSP operations change or develop

• Commit to the mission and values of Christ the King Jesuit College Prep which includes a drug and alcohol-free environment

• Be sensitive to the ethnic, racial, and religious backgrounds of the student body

• Willing to work in a faith-based institution

• Subject to drug and alcohol testing

• Ability to perform work while standing, sitting, and/or walking

• Ability to grasp and move items with hands

• Ability to bend, squat, climb stairs, and reach
