Position SummaryThe Saw Operator is responsible for safely setting up, operating, and maintaining industrial saw equipment to cut raw materials and finished components according to production specifications. This position requires accuracy, attention to detail, mechanical aptitude, and a strong commitment to workplace safety and product quality.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Set up and operate manual or automated saws, including band saws, circular saws, and other cutting equipment.
- Read and interpret work orders, blueprints, drawings, cut lists, and measurement specifications.
- Measure, mark, position, and secure materials before cutting.
- Select appropriate blades, speeds, feeds, and machine settings for each material and job.
- Inspect completed cuts for correct dimensions, angles, finish, and overall quality.
- Use measuring tools such as tape measures, calipers, squares, and micrometers.
- Identify and report defective materials, equipment malfunctions, and production issues.
- Perform routine equipment inspections, blade changes, cleaning, and basic preventive maintenance.
- Maintain accurate production, material usage, scrap, and quality records.
- Move and stage materials using approved lifting equipment when properly trained and authorized.
- Keep the work area clean, organized, and free of safety hazards.
- Follow all safety procedures, quality standards, and company policies.
- Meet production schedules while minimizing waste and maintaining quality.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
- Previous saw operation, machining, fabrication, woodworking, or manufacturing experience preferred.
- Ability to read a tape measure and understand basic shop mathematics, fractions, and decimals.
- Ability to interpret work instructions, drawings, and production documents.
- Basic mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a production team.
- Dependable attendance and willingness to work assigned shifts and overtime as needed.
- Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
- Ability to bend, reach, push, pull, and perform repetitive movements.
- Ability to lift and carry materials weighing up to 50 pounds, with assistance or lifting equipment for heavier loads.
- Sufficient vision and hand-eye coordination to measure materials and operate equipment safely.
- Ability to wear required personal protective equipment, including safety glasses, hearing protection, gloves, and safety footwear.
Work is performed in a manufacturing or production environment where employees may be exposed to moving machinery, sharp materials, noise, dust, and varying temperatures. Strict compliance with safety procedures and the use of required personal protective equipment are mandatory.
