Mechanical Design Engineer – Power Distribution Equipment (Switchgear)
Location: Marietta, OH
Employment Type: Direct Hire
Compensation: Starting at $90,000+ annually, based on experience
Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced Mechanical Design Engineer to lead the development of low-voltage power distribution equipment, specifically switchgear assemblies built to UL 891 standards. This role focuses on creating detailed mechanical designs that are compliant, manufacturable, and aligned with project requirements.
This is a hands-on engineering position requiring prior experience with switchgear design, strong CAD capabilities, and close coordination with electrical engineering and manufacturing teams.
Key FunctionsEngineering Design & Development
- Create mechanical layouts and detailed designs for low-voltage switchgear assemblies in compliance with UL 891
- Design enclosures, internal structures, breaker mounting systems, and cable routing solutions
- Generate complete fabrication packages including general arrangement drawings, sheet metal details, weldments, and bills of materials
Technical Coordination
- Work alongside electrical engineers to align mechanical designs with system requirements such as one-line diagrams, bus configurations, and cable management
- Participate in design reviews to address spacing, interference, and maintainability considerations
- Ensure all designs meet applicable codes, internal standards, and manufacturing capabilities
Manufacturing & Production Support
- Apply design-for-manufacturing (DFM) and design-for-assembly (DFA) principles
- Provide support during fabrication, testing, and inspection phases
- Assist with resolving production issues and improving overall efficiency
- Contribute to cost reduction and value engineering initiatives
Project Ownership
- Manage design deliverables in a deadline-driven environment
- Maintain accuracy and completeness of engineering documentation
- Travel occasionally for project coordination or supplier support
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent practical experience
- 3–8+ years of experience designing low-voltage switchgear systems
- Direct experience with UL 891 switchgear design is required
- Proven ability to independently develop designs from concept through production
- Enclosure and structural design principles
- Breaker integration and compartmentalization
- Bus separation, spacing, and clearance requirements
- Cable entry points, routing, and accessibility
- Thermal management, ventilation, and arc containment considerations
- Familiarity with UL compliance documentation and inspection processes
- Proficiency in CAD platforms such as AutoCAD, SolidWorks, or Inventor
- Strong understanding of sheet metal fabrication and welded assemblies
- High attention to detail with strong documentation practices
- Effective communication and collaboration skills
- Deliver accurate and compliant designs within project timelines
- Ensure smooth transition from engineering to manufacturing with minimal revisions
- Maintain strong coordination with internal teams
- Take ownership of projects while upholding quality and regulatory standards
