JOB TITLE: Editor - Forest Lake Times

DEPARTMENT: News

REPORTS TO: Director of News

SCHEDULE - Hourly. The work week is typically 37.5 hours per week that may include night or weekend work as required. Days may begin early and end late depending on editing and production requirements.

OVERVIEW OF JOB RESPONSIBILITIES - The Editor is the key staff editor in handling day-to-day reporting, editing and story selection, copy editing, proofing, design and pagination of the newspaper, including special or niche publications as required. The Editor assists in choosing content and determining story and graphics placements for the news and features sections, and oversees their overall design. The Editor must demonstrate extraordinary news judgment in choosing stories and advising in the placement of local stories.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - Bachelor or other 4-year degree in journalism or a related field, or equivalent. Strong planning orientation. Professional proficiency in reading, writing and speaking English. Valid drivers’ license and proof of insurance. Basic literacy in computer software, including word processing and Internet browsing/research. Thorough familiarity with AP Style and local modifications. Familiarity with InDesign and Blox. Knowledge of current design trends and advancements.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS - Previous experience as an editor; demonstrated growth and progressive responsibilities as an editor.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS -

  • Interact successfully with others in a business setting, especially working effectively with reporters and other editors.
  • Work collaboratively in a team environment to meet customer needs, including effective interdepartmental relationships with the Advertising, Circulation, Business and Production departments.
  • Work successfully with others in a busy, deadline-driven environment.
  • Maintain regular attendance.
  • Copy edit stories and proof pages for accuracy, fairness, completeness, grammar, style, syntax, organization and clarity on deadline.
  • Write clear and effective headlines, decks, subheads, call-out quotations and cutlines.
  • Design for clarity and maximum visual impact on deadline.
  • Coach reporters developing their editing, news judgment and design skills.
  • Meet and enforce multiple deadlines.
  • Make quick, confident, informed decisions, act promptly and follow through effectively.
  • Be familiar with current libel, copyright, public access and open meeting regulations.
  • Have familiarity with the community, its history, its issues and leading personalities.
  • Manage time effectively.
  • A culture of collaboration and empowerment is maintained.
  • Employees know what is expected of them.
  • Issues affecting work performance are addressed and resolved.
  • Two-way communication occurs by listening and by providing useful information.
  • Company policies are followed and enforced
  • Supervisor is familiar with and remains consistent with the Employee Handbook.
  • Accident reports, timecards, performance reviews, etc. are completed on time.
  • The supervisor sets an example for employees to follow.
  • Procedures are developed and standardized to improve efficiency.
  • Coordination with other departments, publications, offices and buildings creates a smooth work flow.

  • WORK ENVIRONMENT - The newsroom is an intense, demanding environment that requires steady leadership skills and consistent focus. The Editor should maintain a calm, objective and professional demeanor in adverse or emergency situations. The Editor must cordially handle inquiries or observations from the public, including angry responses. The Editor must treat all other newsroom workers with dignity and respect while defining and enforcing expectations.
