Overview

Performing Arts Services, a division of Campus Support Services, provides a broad range of event, performance, and venue support services for the Princeton University community including front of house, guest services, ticketing, logistics, venue management, and production support. The Performing Arts Services division oversees Richardson Auditorium, the Frist Theatre, and University Ticketing, provides venue management to the Lewis Arts complex and the Art Museum complex, and provides support for performance spaces across campus.

The Production Technician, AV Specialist works in collaboration with the production team to provide operational support for rehearsals, events, and performances in Richardson Auditorium and venues across campus. The Technician is the lead production team member for AV support, specializing in video, presentations, graphics, and audio playback. As part of the production team, the Technician contributes to staging, stage management, audio, and lighting support. With technical expertise and a foundation in service excellence, the Technician provides exceptional support for artists and presenters.

Working in collaboration with the Performing Arts Services team, the Technician supports the advance logistical planning for rehearsals and events. The Technician provides excellent counsel on AV strategies and equipment to meet the needs of the artists and presenters. On the day of the event, the Technician provides broad support, including participating in the load-in and load-out, setup and configuration, including testing, troubleshooting, and tuning of technical in-house and rented equipment, and operational support during the rehearsals, events, and performances supporting the needs of artists and presenters. The Technician supports approximately 4-5 events per week.

The Production Technician, AV Specialist is the lead for all video production in the hall, including video presentations, captioning presentations, video recording, and broadcast. In addition, the Technician supports the staging, audio and lighting teams, including setup, configuration, and strike of equipment and stage elements. The Technician ensures that all video and projection equipment is working and properly maintained and stored. The Technician must be capable of troubleshooting and resolving technical issues. The Technician helps maintain a safe and compliant environment that meets OSHA and University requirements for the safety of workers, performers, and patrons. The Technician ensures that all stage elements are secure and safe.

With an emphasis on service excellence, the Production Technician, AV Specialist provides exceptional support for students, faculty, staff and external clients. The Technician understands that the expertise level of the presenters varies and is capable of being flexible and supportive throughout all phases of the production process.

The Production Technician, AV Specialist fosters excellent relationships with artists, presenters, and members of the broader University community. As a member of the Campus Support Services department, the Technician assists with campus-wide initiatives, including Convocation support, departmental functions, committee participation, and professional development.

The position requires a flexible schedule, including evening, weekends, and occasional holidays, driven by the rehearsal and event schedule.

The Production Technician, AV Specialist reports to the Senior Production Technician of Performing Arts Services.

Responsibilities

Technical operational support, with an emphasis on AV support for rehearsals and events in Richardson Auditorium as well as other campus spaces
• Supports advanced logistical planning and provides guidance and recommendations for the use of AV systems, including video presentations, video recording and broadcast, and audio support
• Provides day of operational support, including load-in and load-out, setups, and support during rehearsals and events

Assists with the repair and maintenance of the production equipment in Richardson Auditorium and other campus venues as needed
• Responsible for the upkeep of AV equipment in Richardson Auditorium, including presentational equipment and audio systems
• Provides supplemental support in other campus spaces

Additional duties

The Production Technician, AV Specialist must interact effectively with individuals at all levels within and outside the University, possessing good judgment and discretion. The Technician must consistently provide a high level of support for presenters, artists, and partners.


Qualifications

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree and/or equivalent work experience (3 years of related experience)
  • Demonstrated experience with technical troubleshooting and AV system configuration
  • Demonstrated experience with presentation software
  • Demonstrated experience in providing excellent customer services
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in a diverse environment
  • Willingness and ability to work with a flexible event-driven schedule, including early mornings, late nights, weekends, holidays and long hours, supporting events from start to end
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills and ability to communicate with a diverse support base
  • Excellent computer skills
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to prioritize tasks
  • Valid Driver's License

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Demonstrated experience using video switchers like Tricaster, Roland AV, Blackmagic Designs
  • Demonstrated experience with signal flow and signal routing
  • Familiarity with digital audio transmission systems including Dante, MADI
  • Experience other areas of production operations including:
    • stage management
    • lighting instruments, control and setup
    • audio systems, patching and routing
  • Ability to assist all levels of student, departmental, and external performers and presenters, from professional to novice
  • Ability to communicate technical information to non-technical stakeholders
  • Experience mentoring students is highly desirable
